Microsoft Slams Google’s Search Biz, Addresses EU Inquiry

Microsoft objects to Google's search-related business practices because Google locks in publishers and makes it hard for competing search engines to gain market share, not because of its popularity and competitive power, Microsoft said Friday.

Dave Heiner, vice president and deputy general counsel at Microsoft, released a blog post this afternoon in which he discussed the EU's decision to look into Google's search result rankings. He slammed Google for what he considered to be finger pointing at Microsoft over the investigation.

"Google's public response to this growing regulatory concern has been to point elsewhere--at Microsoft," Heiner wrote. "Google is telling reporters that antitrust concerns about search are not real because some of the complaints come from one of its last remaining search competitors."

On Tuesday night, Google announced that European antitrust regulators are investigating whether Google intentionally buries search results that might promote its competitors. Three companies - Foundem, ejustice.fr, and Ciao from Bing - filed complaints with the EU over Google's rankings, said Julia Holtz, Google's senior competition counsel.

Foundem, which Google said is partly funded by Microsoft, and ejustice.fr are arguing that Google's algorithms demote their search results because they are a vertical search engine and, therefore, competitive with Google, Holtz said.

In regards to the third company, Ciao, Google suggested that the problems with them started after Microsoft acquired the company in 2008. Prior to that, Ciao was "a long-time AdSense partner of Google's, with whom we always had a good relationship," Holtz said. After Microsoft bought Ciao and re-branded it Ciao from Bing, Google "started receiving complaints about our standard terms and conditions."

In his blog post, Heiner did not address Microsoft's connection to the three companies, ...

Google Adds Location-Based Results to Search

search by location.JPG

Google on Friday added the ability to search by location. Looking for a vet in your neighborhood? A good wine store? Now you no longer have to type in your city name in the search field, as the "nearby" tab will automatically pull local results.

"Location has become an important part of the way we search," Jackie Bavaro, a Google product manager, wrote in a blog post. "If you're a foodie looking for restaurant details, food blogs or the closest farmer's market, location can be vital to helping you find the right information."

To activate, conduct a search on Google.com and click "search options" on the top left-hand side of the results page. Scroll down, click "nearby" and Google will return results closest to you, if you are logged into your Google account. To change where you are, click "custom location" and enter the city, state, or region of choice.

"One of the really helpful things about this tool is that it works geographically -- not just with keywords -- so you don't have to worry about adding 'Minneapolis' to your query and missing webpages that only say 'St. Paul' or 'Twin Cities,'" Bavaro wrote.

The feature is currently only available in English.

The Spark Radio app leverages the RadioTime.com guide to find terrestrial and Internet-only radio stations. The company said in a statement support for over 30,000 are planned for April.
The app lets listeners search for stations or programs by keyword, location, or the station URL, and can also browse stations by genre and location. A GPS component, meanwhile, lets users find stations based on current location.
It also includes eight graphic visualizers that react to the music, complete with touch sensitivity so "users can interact and play while they listen." The $5.99 app is available now in Apple's App Store.

Facebook Gets Patent for Social News Feed

You know those patents we see in the tech world that seem overly broad and tend to restrict competition in the space? Well, check out this one. Social networking giant Facebook was just granted a patent for "displaying a news feed in a social media network."

The patent, which was filed back in 2006, covers the information that is released the in the information river on Facebook's front page. It doesn't seem to cover status updates exclusively, meaning that sites like MySpace are probably safe on that front.

As many sites are pointing out, Twitter also seems safe from the effects of the recently granted patent.

Buzz Can Tweet Sends your Google Buzz to Twitter

Buzz Can Tweet - BannerWhen Google unveiled Google Buzz, a lot of people complained about a number of issues, including the fact that it just seemed to replicate features already in Twitter and Facebook. Buzz also has the ability to automatically connect to your Twitter account and import items you post to Twitter for your Buzz followers.
Buzz Can Tweet does the opposite. If you're a fan of Google Buzz and would prefer to use it to post updates, photos, videos, and updates from other services connected to Google Buzz, the Buzz Can Tweet service will re-post all of that media and content to Twitter for you, complete with shortened links so your Twitter followers can see the items you post.
Buzz Can Tweet gives your Twitter users a link to your Google Buzz posts every time you update the service. It doesn't quite re-populate the exact text, but it does update your Twitter account with new posts and text.
The service allows you to use your own bit.ly account for URL shortening, and you can even tell Buzz Can Tweet to only post certain types of items to Twitter from Buzz. For example, you can create a hashtag so the service will repost only items with that hashtag, or exclude certain text after a specific keyword. You can even tell the service not to link back to Buzz if the total size of the tweet is less than 140 characters.
Buzz Can Tweet is definitely designed for people who want to make the most use of Google Buzz's multimedia capabilities and its hooks into other Web services, such as Picasa, YouTube, Google Reader, ...

Add to Amazon Wish List Chrome Extension Makes Shopping Easier

Amazon Wish List Chrome - ShirtAs many Amazon shoppers know, Amazon's Universal Wish List allows you to shop on any site on the Web and add products that you find from other online stores to your Amazon Wish List. Even if you're looking for something that Amazon doesn't sell, you can send just one wish list to friends and family when the holidays or a birthday rolls around. The problem is that you have to toggle between two pages to add an item from another site to your Amazon list, or use a bookmarklet that takes you to Amazon.
With the Add to Amazon Wish List extension for Google Chrome, you can shop at any other site on the Web and just click an icon in the Chrome toolbar to add the item you're viewing to your Amazon wish list, complete with its original location and price.
The Amazon Wish List extension installs easily, and once it's installed you'll see an Amazon logo button in the Chrome toolbar, just to the right of the address bar. Simply shop around the Web like normal, and if you find something you want to add to your Amazon Wish List, click the button. You won't leave the page, and you won't be directed to Amazon. Instead, you'll get an Amazon overlay that will let you customize the item's entry in your wish list before you add it.
The overlay shows you a photo of the item as it'll be entered into your Wish List and gives you text fields that are automatically populated from the site on which you were shopping. If the extension can pick up what the item ...
