On Thursday, a federal judge threw out the conviction of Lori Drew for her part in a MySpace ruse that ended with a 13-year-old girl committing suicide. Drew was convicted in November, but appealed her case. The indictment alleged that Drew, along with others, registered as a member of MySpace under the name Josh Evans. Drew and her co-conspirators then used the Josh Evans account to contact Megan and began what the girl believed was an online romance with a 16-year-old boy. After approximately four weeks of flirtations between Evans and Megan, Drew and her co-conspirators broke off the relationship. Within an hour, Megan hanged herself in her room. She died the next day. U.S. District Judge George Wu acquitted Drew of misdemeanor counts of accessing computers without authorization. The ruling is tentative until the judge puts it in writing and pointed to another case where a judge changed his mind after his initial ruling, signaling that the case is not final. Prosecutors are seeking a three-year prison sentence and a $300,000 fine. Ruled Unconstitutional The indictment alleged Drew and her co-conspirators violated MySpace’s terms of service that prohibit users from using fraudulent registration information, using accounts to obtain personal information about juvenile members, and using the MySpace communication services to harass, abuse or harm other members. In the government’s theory, if someone signs up for an online service and then does not follow the rules of that service, the use of the service is unauthorized and thus (according to this indictment) a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 1030. That law is used to prosecute people who break into a computer system. However, Wu said to convict Drew would mean anyone who has ever violated MySpace’s terms of service would also be guilty of a misdemeanor. Ultimately, he decided such ...
By Andrew Liszewski I have to agree with the chaps at the Red Ferret Journal when it comes to this Spy Shaver Camera. No one on Earth, not even a bona fide spy, has any use for a video camera hidden inside a razer. Seriously though, are you going to whip this thing out in the middle of a confidential meeting and start subtly shaving so that no one suspects you’re videotaping the proceedings? Or maybe you’ll fool the ushers at the local cinema into thinking that you aren’t actually trying to make a pirate copy of Transformers 2 , but just felt that your 5 o’clock shadow had to go right then and there? I mean the Omejo website even has the audacity to say this thing is ideal for CIA agents, spy agencies and the police. Anyways, the razer captures video at 640×480 to an AVI file and can continuously record to its 4GB of on-board flash memory until it’s full. The rechargeable battery is supposedly good for about 7-8 hours, though it’s not mentioned if that includes time spent shaving, or even if the razer portion actually works. (I assume not.) The best part though is that this thing will set you back a ridiculous $240. [ Spy Shaver Camera DVR ] VIA [ The Red Ferret Journal ]

By Andrew Liszewski Yep, another day, another novelty alarm clock. This time it’s a miniature version of DDR that requires you to follow the pattern of the light-up dance pads with your fingers! So if finding the snooze button is a monumental task for you every morning, there’s probably no chance you’ll be able to turn this thing off. But at just $16 from ThumpsUp! it’s not that expensive to replace should it accidentally have a fatal run-in with the wall. [ Finger Dance Alarm Clock ] VIA [ Chip Chick ]

Let's face it, most of us aren't in love with our jobs, and even if you do truly love your job there are times at the office where you wish you weren't there. Other times, something happens at the office that's just too funny not to share with the world, regardless of whether you love or hate your job. If you have a story about how horrible your workplace is or about the funny thing your coworkers did at the last happy hours, share it with the world at MyJobJabs, a site that collects hilarious stories about your workplace and puts them on display for the world to see, discuss, and share.
MyJobJabs is a great way to waste a little time at the office, or share some of the better stories that come out of your workplace. Whether your boss is infamous for fiddling with his blackberry in critical meetings or your coworker got busted printing copies of his resume on the office copier, the site invites stories of all kinds from people in every line of work. The site groups the jabs it receives into categories that you can navigate at the top of the window. One click will take you to the Call Center section, the IT section, stories from restaurant workers, or stories from workers in public service like police, firefighters, or nurses. The site even has a collection of stories from people in the entertainment industry. The site is new however, so not all of ...
In what may well be the first ever "scoop" in the short history of the PCMag After Hours podcast, Boing Boing blogger Xeni Jardin announced a new partnership between the massively-popular blog's video site and Virgin American airlines.
"I think it's perfectly appropriate to announce in this interview," Jardin told After Hours, "they're going to give us an entire channel. When you're sitting on a Virgin American plane, in between Fox News and Sci-fi, you'll find Boing Boing." Jardin then added, laughing, "I think if you crossed Rupert Murdoch with a Cylon, you'd get Boing Boing."
The new channel will consist of three-hours of programming hand-picked by the Boing Boing Video staff, including Boing Boing produced content, music videos, and comedy. "We find that people are less interested in timely heavy news in that environment than they are in the light-weight, escapist stuff," explained Jardin.
The channel is the latest in an existing partnership, which has already brought some Boing Boing Video content to the plane. Virgin American also recently helped provide some funding for the "Day in the Clouds" episode of the program [embedded above], which was set aboard two Virgin American planes.
To hear the full interview--as well as additional interviews with CNet's Natali Del Conte, Wine Library TV's Gary Vaynerchuck, and Break Room Live's Marc Maron, check out the latest episode of After Hours.
