Wal-Mart Re-Launches MP3 Store with 74-Cent Downloads

Filed under: Review, music - 28 Oct 2008

Wal-Mart re-launched its MP3 Music Downloads store Tuesday with slashed prices and added support.

The retail giant will offer its top 25 songs for 74 cents per download; standard pricing will remain at 94 cents. Customers will also get one free download for every physical CD they purchase in a Wal-Mart store or online.

The MP3 store, which has a catalogue of 3 million songs, now supports the Mac OS, Linux, and Windows operating systems, and is accessible via Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer.

Also this week, Wal-Mart announced that it will sell Google's G1 phone for $148.88 -- $30 less than T-Mobile.

Yahoo!, Google, Microsoft Partner on Free Speech Group

A joint effort between Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo! might seem like an awkward encounter waiting to happen, but the three Internet giants confirmed Tuesday that they will work together on an initiative aimed at preserving free speech on the Web.

The Global Network Initiative (GNI) is intended to provide guidance to technology companies with regard to advancing freedom of expression and privacy in countries with laws and policies that interfere with these goals.

In addition to the three tech companies, GNI will also include Human Rights First, the Committee to Protect Journalists, Human Rights Watch, and Human Rights in China.

The Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT), Business for Social Responsibility, facilitated the creation of GNI; the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University also offered its expertise.

"This initiative is the result of two years of discussions with other leading technology companies, human rights organizations, socially responsible investors and academic institutions," Andrew McLaughlin, Google's director of public policy and government Affairs, wrote in a blog post. "We know that common action by these diverse groups is more likely to bring about change in government policies than the efforts of any one company or group acting alone."

"Yahoo was founded on the belief that access to information can enrich people's lives, and the principles we unveil today reflect our determination that our actions match our values around the world," Jerry Yang, Yahoo's CEO and co-founder, said in a statement. "These principles provide a valuable roadmap for companies like Yahoo operating in markets where freedom of expression and privacy are unfairly restricted."

GNI has established Principles on Freedom of Expression and Privacy. That document has not yet been published. The group's ...

Comcast Says It’s Resolved Users’ E-mail Problems

Since early last month, a number of Comcast subscribers have been experiencing problems logging in to their Comcast.net e-mail address. The subscribers have attempted to contact the cable provider, some with more success than other.

One thread on Comcast's forums, which dates back to September 10th, has since racked up a staggering 419 messages spread out over nine pages, the last of which dates back to around 1:00 PM this afternoon. Our own blogger Geoff Fox alerted us to this.

"This has been an intermittent problem in past weeks however for the last 5 days straight this has been occurring," wrote the first user on the thread, "I use Microsoft Outlook (not Express) for my e-mail. A small window keeps appearing which reads: Enter Network Password - Please type your user name and password."

"My husband is having the same problem and he has used Opera, Thunderbird, Evolution and Outlook Express," she continues. "The same popup appears no matter what program is used. This is driving us nuts. He has spent time with a techie on the phone who was satisfied that everything was okay after sending and receiving test messages via Webmail."

We contacted Comcast spokesman Charlie Douglas abut the issue. "The vast majority of the customers that were affected should be able to access accounts now," he said. "I don't have too much detail, other than the fact that I know our engineers were made aware of the problem almost immediately. They're working on it--there may be a small number of customers that are experiencing problems." Geoff's e-mail issues have since been resolved. Have you had any problems logging in to your Comcast e-mail account? Are you continuing to have them? ...

Tech CEOs Push Election Day ‘Vote Hour’

Do you have time to vote on Election Day?

If you work for some of the top tech companies in the country, the answer should be yes. The CEOs of several tech giants like Google, eBay, and Intel have recorded videos urging their employees to take a "Vote Hour" on November 4.

The idea for VoteHour.org came from a Google employee who read a report from the U.S. Census Bureau that said the No. 1 reason people did not vote in the 2004 presidential election was because they were too busy or had conflicting work schedules.

"So this Googler sent an email to Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google Inc., who volunteered to record a message of support and encouraged some fellow CEOs to join him...and the Vote Hour was born," according to the group's Web site.

"It's really important that each and every one of you takes a vote hour; to go out, and on November 4, vote," Schmidt said in his video, shown above. "It's important to use Google to get information about how to make the best decision for our government, but the most important thing is, go out and vote."

Schmidt recently hit the road to stump for Democratic hopeful Barack Obama, but he and other tech CEOs urged Americans of all political persuasions to vote on Election Day.

"We're about to vote for one of the most important presidential elections in my lifetime and certainly in yours and I think it's critical that we all turn out the vote one way or another," said Intel CEO Paul Otellini in his spot. "It's more important to do this than to take an extra hour at work, ...
