Joost Update Offers Online Videos and Social Networking

There's been a lot of talk about Joost on AppScout over the last year, and here comes more news: Joost recently released an updated version of the online video service that allows you to watch videos in your Web browser, rather than having to download it to your computer. On October 14, Joost released a new Flash-based version with a number of social tools designed to help people navigate through the enormous content library (the largest online library of legal video programming).

"People have always relied on their friends' recommendations to figure out which movies they want to watch, or talked about their favorite TV shows and moments with friends and colleagues--and now Joost has combined those real-life experiences in one online destination," Joost CEO Mike Volpi said in a statement. "Our integrated social tools make it easier than ever for people to find the shows, film and music they want to watch, and to form communities around that content, which ultimately enriches their overall experience."

Users can share videos--ranging from short clips to entire movies (they have a nice collection of old horror movies for Halloween)--using many social networking sites, including Facebook, Delicious, Twitter, Reddit, Digg, and many others.

Joost now lets users interact with videos and other Joosters. People can share their opinions about a video through comments, tags or "shouts," which lets you choose an icon (Hot, LOL, WTF, Puke, or Wow) to describe how you feel about the video. You can also find out what your friends are watching by adding them to your profile. And you can interact with users by finding ...

Judge Orders Sarah Palin to Retain E-Mails from Her Yahoo! Account

An Alaska judge last week ordered Governer Sarah Palin to retain copies of e-mails sent from her personal Yahoo! account. At issue is a lawsuit over Palin's alleged use of personal e-mail for state business, a move that could run afoul of state transparency laws.

The Anchorage Daily News reports that state officials are willing to comply, but are unsure what e-mails are still in existence.

"We entered into the hearing ... willing to work to preserve those e-mails that do relate to state business that may have been sent to or from private accounts, to the extent they can be preserved at this point," Mike Mitchell, assistant attorney general, told the paper.

Palin, the Republican candidate for vice president, reportedly deleted her gov.palin@yahoo.com address after a hacker gained access to the account in September and published its contents on the Web. A 20-year-old college student has since been indicted for the hack.

The lawsuit over Palin's Yahoo! account was filed by Andree McLeod, an Anchorage activist and former state worker.

Why JoeThePlumber.com Loves “Joe the Plumber”

Joetheplumber.com%20logo.JPGThe day after the third and final presidential debate, "Joe the Plumber" might be the most popular man in America. No, not Joe Wurzelbacher, the Toledo, Ohio-based man who reportedly complained to Sen. Barack Obama about his tax policies and who was name-checked in the debate more than 20 times.

No, I mean Joe Francis, a plumber in Amarillo, Tex. who owns JoeThePlumber.com.

Reportedly, Joe has been offered thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars to give up his Web site. While Joe didn't say what his plans were, he did confirm that his phone "has been ringing off the hook."

So far, the extra calls haven't translated into extra business; this probably isn't a surprise, since Joe only services Amarillo clients. "But I expect it will pick up in the near future," he said.

I asked Joe Francis what he might tell Joe Wurzelbacher, if he met him. "There's another Joe the Plumber," he said.

And who is Joe Francis voting for in November? "I'm voting for Joe the Plumber," he said. Obviously, this man knows what effective branding is.

Oddly enough, Google ranks Joe Lara's site, JoeLaraThePlumber, higher than Joe Francis' joetheplumber.com. Just what we need: two incumbent "Joe the Plumber"'s, plus an independent candidate!
