Economic Downturn Proving a Boom for Some Sites

It seems like just about everyone these days is watching the market with a certain sense of existential dread. However, downturns in the economy, no matter how scary, don't necessarily mean bad news for everyone.

In fact, certain sectors of the business world actually see an upswing while the rest of the country is pulling its hair out and contemplating leaps from high windows. We spoke with representatives from a handful of sites to see which of our favorite sites are actually succeeding, despite--or, in some case because of--the current economic crisis.

Whether due to necessity or morbid anticipation, job sites seem a logical destination for a sluggish economy. We spoke to a representative from Monster.com who directed us to the site's Employment Index. According to the Monster rep, the index is a "monthly gauge of U.S. online job demand based on a real-time review of millions of employer job opportunities culled from a large representative selection of corporate career Web sites and job boards, including Monster."

Unfortunately, the last published index is from September. However, the index did note an increase in online job demand for the second consecutive month. Though, while demand has increased, the number of available jobs has actually decreased some 14 percent from the year before.

There is, however, better news for the folks over at Yahoo! Finance. While Yahoo! itselft has been struggling a bit since Microsoft's failed bid for the company, the finance page has been doing just dandy in recent months. "Yahoo! Finance has actually seen record traffic during the economic crisis," said Stephanie Arnold, Yahoo! Finance representative.

The weeks of September 15, September 22 and September 29 were ...

AccuWeather Launches Twitter and Tumblr Feeds

Filed under: Review, utilities - 10 Oct 2008

AccuWeather - Twitter Feed

If you're a weather junkie like I am, you want to wake up in the morning and immediately know what temperature it is outside and what the high for the day will be. You also want to know if there are any changes to the forecast as the day progresses like incoming storms, high winds, or a sharp increase in temperature. AccuWeather wants to keep you in the loop as much as you like to stay informed. The company announced yesterday a way to stay up to date with the forecast in your area with AccuWeather feeds for Twitter and Tumblr.

The new feeds don't spam your Twitter or Tumblr accounts; they currently update at 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. with the current conditions and the forecast for the next several hours. The morning update includes the high for the day and information on the day's forecast, and the evening update includes the evening forecast and the low temperature for the night. It would be useful if the folks at AccuWeather also use the feed for important weather updates and alerts for the various cities they have feeds for, but the service was just announced yesterday, so that may be on the horizon.

The new AccuWeather feeds provide information for 40 cities in the United States from Los Angeles to Washington, DC, and 13 cities around the world including Bangalore, London, Cape Town, and Toronto. The Tumblr updates have icons that tell you what kind of weather to expect at a glance, the forecast, and sky conditions, and a link to AccuWeather.com for more information. The Twitter updates ...

PDFMeNot Makes PDF Sharing Easy

PDFMeNot - Logo There are a number of utilities that allow you to manage your PDFs online like PDFEscape and PDF Hammer, but when it comes to actually reading or browsing a PDF file, you still have to download it, open a desktop app to review it, and you have to send the file to others if you want to share it. With PDFMeNot, a Web app from the folks behind RetailMeNot and BugMeNot, you can share PDF documents with others, upload your own to share, and you don't have to download it locally when you want to view the document--everything happens on the Web.

If you're using a relatively fast PDF reader like SumatraPDF, you may not mind having to download PDFs to open and review them. But even the speediest PDF readers can slow down when you download more and have to open larger PDF documents. PDFMeNot wants to free users from the need to have a PDF reader installed on their desktop at all and wants to give document creators a way to easily share their PDFs on the Web.

To use PDFMeNot, simply paste the URL of a PDF that's already on the Web into the input box. PDFMeNot will process the document and open it if it's not an encrypted PDF. Once the document is open, the document controls are simple: on the upper right side of the screen, you can zoom in or out on the document and you can click back and forward buttons to move between pages.

MapQuest Adds Yelp, Sports

Once the dominant force in online mapping, MapQuest is amping up its game by teaming with online restaurant-review service Yelp. The mutually beneficial deal will expand MapQuest's content and drive more traffic to Yelp.

MapQuest will also add sports info to its local site, according to CNET. Launched a month ago, the AOL-owned site's local section has been a point of success for MapQuest, drawing around 3.3 visitors a month.

MapQuest is also rolling out a new, less dominant ad layout.

Zoho Mail Gets Gears-Enabled Offline Support

Zoho loves Google. Really, it does. The online office suite has once again adopted Google Gears--before Google got the chance to do so for its competing app. Zoho Mail will utilize the offline capabilities enabled by Google Gears, a feature that Gmail has yet to roll out.

It's a familiar store--Zoho rolled out Gears-enable offline functionality several months before Google followed suit with Docs.

Offline access to Zoho Mail requires Gears to be installed on IE or Firefox--the company is currently working on adding Chrome and Safari support. According to ReadWriteWeb, users can download images and attachments in offline mode.

TheDailyBeast.com Stylishly Joins the List of Online News Aggregators

beast_header.pngI am a voracious reader. Old school--I still get two newspapers delivered each morning and blast through general, political and tech news sites on the Web all day. I'm hitting the publish button for this post at 3:34 AM. I am up and reading. That's why I'm moderately happy there's yet another news aggregator site online, Tina Brown's "The Daily Beast."

Ms. Brown, who reigned over the ill fated Talk Magazine,--blowing through a reported $54 million in the process and walking away with a $1,000,000 golden parachute--was once quoted by the New York Times saying, ''Any great, long career has at least one flameout in it. I'm very proud of having taken the risk.''

Alas, bad timing on that line, as she then proceeded to flame out with her "Topic A with Tina Brown" on CNBC! Said the NY Times

It was supposed to be serious fun, but almost no one joined the party. Broadcast in an infomercial ghetto--Sunday nights on a business channel--her show managed the ratings of a night-light, an average of 62,000 viewers in the last year.

News aggregators (and I suppose AppScout can be considered one) troll the Internet for news reported by others that fits within a specific editorial framework. AppScout freely admits to "scour the world in search of the best software, sites, and Web apps." Brown's Daily Beast (actually bankrolled by Barry Diller's InterActive Corporaton) is "the omnivorous friend who hears about the best stuff and forwards it to you with a twist. It allows you to lead the conversation, rather than simply follow it."

I often worry news ...
