Obama Reveals VP Choice Via Text Message, Email

Obama_Mobile.jpg

Senator Barack Obama made history today. That's right: I am talking about the text message sent out early this morning to millions of Obama supporters announcing his choice for second in command. The campaign employed its now award-winning HOPE-Obama Mobile data management system to spread the word ahead of making the official media announcement later this afternoon. Oh, by the way, Joe Biden is the choice for VP.

"Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee. Spread the word!" the one-way announcement read. Since local mobile carrier charges applied to every incoming text message, Obama enthusiasts were able to opt for an email instead . Sent around the same time as the text, it read: "I have some important news that I want to make official. I've chosen Joe Biden to be my running mate. Joe and I will appear for the first time as running mates this afternoon in Springfield, Illinois -- the same place this campaign began more than 19 months ago."

Obama's high-tech VP announcement marks the first instance of mobile data sharing being strategically utilized in presidential politics. Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean was arguably the first elected official to marry politics and the Internet when he used social Web to amass vast grassroots support for his own presidential run in 2004.
