You know how it goes with Sony — proprietary just seems to rule the roost. Thankfully, the outfit is at least recognizing a trend in the market by trotting out an iPod-friendly version of its S-AIR wireless audio technology. The new S-AIRPLAY system (formally known a…

Man, we didn’t even know the Muteki moniker was still in existence. Nevertheless, Sony has just added a big, naughty member to said congregation with the LBT-DJ2i XROSS FADE. that rather beastly music system packs 450 total watts of capability, a CD player, AM / FM tu…

Filed under: Ask Engadget, HandheldsFace it, folks — Net browsing shouldn’t be confined to your desktop / laptop. Atom processors still in short supply?

Filed under: Desktops, LaptopsIt’s been mostly hugs and cupcakes for Intel’s Atom processors lately — they’re apparently selling like hotcakes, and they’re the stars of the Intel Developer Conference that week. But although Intel was confidently predicting that supply would meet demand by next mont…

Are Mozilla’s ‘Extend Firefox 3′ Winners A Little Dull?

Filed under: Review, browsers - 21 Aug 2008
mozilla%20labs.JPGHere, you'll find Mozilla's list of winners for its "Extend Firefox 3" contest, which asked developers to submit their best add-ons for the browser.

Admittedly, there are a few plug-ins of interest. My absolute favorite is Read It Later by Nate Weiner, which will be downloaded and added on right after this post. As the name suggests, the plug-in saves a local copy of pages (think news stories or individual blog posts) that you'll probably never visit again, but want to read once at a more convenient time. The grand prize winner, Pencil, also seems useful, although not for me.

I yawned at the rest, though.

Take a look at the list. What is it with tags, tags, and more tags? Integration with last.fm? OK, maybe, although my machine has enough memory that I can open the actual application in another window. (I'm not enough of a music nut to care what my friends are listening to at the moment, anyway.) And I really could care less what my bookmarks look like in preview -- I mean, I've bookmarked them. I should know what they look like.

I suspect that there may be some gems in the runners-up, although I'm not sure people are going to be bothered to look. Who voted for these?

Photosynth: It’s Up! It’s Down! It’s Back Up, Sorta

Microsoft's Photosynth, which went live on Thursday, has been up, down, and apparently is still in limbo as of Thursday evening.

According to a company blog post, Microsoft's dev team didn't quite figure on the amount if traffic the new site would draw, as Geoff Fox noted earlier. During the middle of the day, Microsoft placed the site in read-only mode, then with basic functionality. As of 5:45 PM PDT, the site still wasn't accepting new synths, but the blog indicated that "they would be back up shortly". On the other hand, that's pretty much the same thing they said at 1:50 PM Pacific, too.

"We've been under incredible demand since we released just over 12 hours ago," Microsoft said. "With everyone waking up around the world traffic has been on a steady ramp up since that release and has far exceeded even our most optimistic expectations.

"Getting ready for the launch we did massive amounts of performance testing, built capacity model after capacity model, and yet with all of that, you threw so much traffic our way that we need to add more capacity. We are adding that extra horsepower right now and should be back up shortly."

Nintendo adds a little color to the Wii, just when we thought it didn’t care

The iPhone 3G hits 20 more countries tomorrow, and while we doubt the hype will match the craziness of launch day, that’s not stopping Orange from trying to re-create the insanity in Poland — it’s hiring “dozens” of actors to line up at 20 stores around the country to “drum …
