There's $150 million out there for folks developing mobile applications - and the Blackberry Partners Fund is getting close to spending some of it. That's the word from Rick Segal, a partner at JLA Ventures, one of the investors in the fund.

"We have a number of opportunities at signed Term Sheet stage," Segal said in an e-mail. "They've got em signed, were' trying to close em. My hope is that shortly, we can announce a number of these deals as closed."

Other press reports have said that the fund will be announcing three or four companies receiving cash infusions this week.

The BPF is a joint effort between RIM, the makers of Blackberry handhelds; Thomson Reuters, RBC (formerly the Royal Bank of Canada), JLA Ventures, and other limited partners to pump up the mobile apps marketplace. Its target companies don't have to be writing for Blackberries, they just have to be writing for mobile platforms.

Segal says the fund has looked at "well over 2400 opportunities" and that "for sure, we are looking at a ton of deals."

"Today the fund is less than 90 days old and even less so from the perspective of 'cash in the bank,' so my own opinion is that people should be yelling at us around the 6 month mark if we haven't done anything, not where we are today," he writes.

The BPF is a counterpart to the iFund, the highly publicized $100 million fund for iPhone developers from venture capitalists Kleiner Perkins announced in early March. So far, the iFund has made three investments. Two were second-round investments in companies that had already received venture capital, Pelago and iControl. Call of Duty: World at War- Playing this game confirmed my earlier predictions: The charging Japanese enemies in the game react similarly to the dogs that players fought in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in that they charge at you screaming with bayonets. This time, they're slower and bigger targets; so make sure you pick them off beforehand. Playing the game on the Xbox 360 is quite an experience, and playing in cooperative mode makes you feel more at ease that someone on your squad isn't controlled by the AI. Watching the flamethrower in action is great and the environments (and enemies) seem to burn the same way videos of Far Cry 2 show. Expect relentless fighting in both wide-open fields and in the close quarters of buildings. We got a taste of some new content to the game--all I can say at this point is that players from Modern Warfare will possibly see more similarities than differences between the two games.
