Lenovo’s S10 netbook gets the hands-on treatment

Lenovo’s S10 netbook might not be too daring in the design division, but it’s still a pretty classy piece of kit — mix that in with the $399 starting price point and Lenovo’s marketing muscle, and we’d say that these first hands-on shots are just a prelude of things to come. To…

Move by, OLPC — the $12 Apple II-based PC is coming

Alright, so it won’t be a laptop, adorable, or have a cheeky Linux-based OS that’s eventually replaced by Windows, but unlike the OLPC or the too-good-to-be-true $10 laptop, the $12 PC currently being developed at MIT will probably hit its price target. The project, being spear…

IBM’s Homeward Bound Linux PC Push

IBM fired the opening salvo at that year’s LinuxWorld Conference and Expo, and to the surprise of no one, it was aimed squarely at Microsoft. certain, it was the low-hanging fruit — Microsoft’s an easy target. It’s kind of like taking pot shots at John McCain at an Obama fund-raiser. But he…

Comcast Acquires DailyCandy for $125 Million

Comcast clearly has some deep pockets. When they're not hiring lawyers to do battle with the FCC over bandwidth issues, the company is apparently looking to invest in newsletter businesses.

Today the cable provider announced that it had beat out media conglomerate Viacom in a bid to buy DailyCandy. The final check came out to a whopping $125 million. While, according to Silicon Alley Insider, rumors of Comcast's interest in the company had surfaced earlier, bids were valued at around $75 million.

DailyCandy was founded in 2000 as a New York based daily newletter. It's since expanded to a number of major American cities, including Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco. In 2006, the company went international by adding London to the list.

UPDATE: A source close to the deal has confirmed with PC Magazine that Comcast has indeed purchased DailyCandy for $125 million. Details about how the newsletter will be integrated with Comcast's holdings after the jump.

Comcast is looking to build businesses that can be monetized on the Web, and DailyCandy "fits squarely" into that goal, according to the source. It is an "online brand that reaches a highly engaged and loyal audience."

DailyCandy is currently targeted for 13 cities, plus a national e-mail and a Web site with six different editorial focuses. Its 2.5 million subscribers are primarily females aged 18 to 40, a key demographic Comcast has been targeting.

Comcast's Interactive Media properties include the movie Web site Fandango, video Web site Fancast, and the company's main site, Comcast.net.

After the DailyCandy integration is complete, a visitor to Fandango who is logged in via ZIP code, for example, might receive DailyCandy recommendations for local ...
