Sandberg intros wireless keyboard / touchpad combo for HTPCs

Wireless keyboards with built-in pointing devices are normally pretty ugly, and Sandberg’s new HTPC-oriented keyboard is no exception: certain, the committed Media Center Keys and 32-foot range are nice, but that two-tone color scheme is straight out of 1987. Plus…

FCC Vote Slams Comcast On Network Management

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has reportedly voted in favor of an "enforcement action" against Comcast regarding its network management practices.

Chairman Kevin Martin and Democratic Commissioners Michael Copps and Jonathan Adelstein approved the action, according to press reports. That gives it enough votes to move ahead, though all four commissioners must cast their votes before the decision is final.

"It is always hard to respond to rumors, however, we continue to assert that our network management practices were reasonable, wholly consistent with industry practices and that we did not block access to Web sites or online applications, including peer-to-peer services," a Comcast spokeswoman said in an e-mail Friday night. "We do not believe the record supports any other conclusion."

Free Press, the Washington-based interest group that called on the FCC to investigate Comcast's network management tactics, was pleased by the news.

"It adopted, this order would send a strong signal to the marketplace that arbitrarily interfering with users' online choices is not acceptable. Internet service providers do not get to decide the winners and losers online," Marvin Ammori, general counsel of Free Press, said in a statement. "Should Comcast finally be held accountable for its illegal practices, it will be the direct result of historic public involvement in this precedent-setting debate."

Chairman Martin said on July 11 that he would not recommend a fine against Comcast regarding its network management policy, but will instead demand that Comcast stop hindering consumer access to certain applications.

An investigation that started earlier this year found that Comcast is "broadly and arbitrarily" blocking certain applications like BitTorrent, which in turn, denies "subscriber access to the legal Internet ...

BestRestroom.com: Yes, They’re Now Being Rated!

vermont_marble_bathroom.jpg

This is not as weighty a vote as the presidential election or even American Idol, but it's time to vote for "America's Best Restroom." What strikes closer to home than knowing where you'll find the best restroom? Of course, that's what BestRestroom.com is all about. It's all based on the notion that you can learn a lot about a business by how they maintain their toilets. Judging by the picture at the top of this entry, I like the business plan at the Vermont Marble Museum. Nice John guys!

Though previous winners have to sit and wait (do they get to read the newspaper?) for five years,
any restroom in the United States that is open to the public is eligible for this award. Nominated restrooms are considered by the editing team based on eligibility, style, comments from the nomination and cooperation with the process. In other words, you won't be considered if you don't give a... well, you get the point.

During the last five years, winners have included Notre Dame University, The Grand Casino in Biloxi MS and Ft. Smith Regional Airport-Fort Smith, AR. Click for a glimpse of their inner sanctums. Are you surprised to hear one winner was from Flushing, MI? Me neither. Hey, Maybe I was destined to write this because I grew up in Flushing, NY!

The whole shooting match is sponsored by Cintas, who I've always thought of as being just in the uniform business. As it turns out, like most of us, Cintas cleans bathrooms too.

iriver’s Spinn hits the FCC, means nothing

Sure, it doesn’t look like much thanks to the FCC’s staunch aversion to photo glam, but that’s iriver’s Spinn PMP, a product which had us at a full, rigid swoon back at CES. While that would generally be good news, the model approved features a DAB radio and DMB television tuner — in other word…
