Hands On: MyWeather ESP:Online

myweather.jpg

When I'm not writing here, I forecast the weather. As geeky occupations go, being a meteorologist is right up there. I spend my days poring over maps, charts and numbers. Some of what I do, I don't want to share. Let's call it job security. But, some of the best 'nowcasting' techniques, systems I use every day, are available to anyone with a computer.

The National Weather Service's network of NEXRAD radars is superb. To make it even better, private companies have taken that NWS data and massaged it to create new products. These are often more useful to the general public. That's the goal of MyWeather's ESP:Online.

A little disclosure here. I use equipment from MyWeather's parent company every day and have for well over a decade. I also know, and am friendly, with a lot of their staff. I'm going to try and not let that affect my review, but it would be wrong not to let you know.

ESP:Online places the NEXRAD radar and GOES satellite data over Microsoft's Virtual Earth map database. That allows you to see radar and satellites over a photorealistc image or plain map. I was surprised to find no way to zoom in. My state, Connecticut, only covers about half the viewing window. Microsoft and NEXRAD both provide more detail which could be useful if I could just get closer.

I called up ESP:Online, while simultaneously looking at the images from my professional equipment. All the storms were placed where they should be, though the ...
