Wii Sports Boxing Competition in NYC: Ladies Only

Wii boxing glovesWho'd have thought that drinking and the Wii would go so well together? Nintendo is hosting a Wii Sports Boxing contest in New York City at a bar called Sutton Place at 1015 2nd Ave., on Thursday, June 12, at 7 pm.

Don't expect to see two muscular brutes slug it out with Wii controllers though--this contest is reserved for women only. Participants will have a chance to win a Wii by boxing friends, colleagues, or anyone else who wants to be the next million-dollar baby.

If you're in the mood for more carnage, the Super Smash Bros. Brawl Wii Father's Day Tournament will be held in the Nintendo World store at Rockefeller Plaza in New York, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 15. Teams of dads and kids will compete against each other in a bracket-style tournament. People of all ages--and genders--are invited.

SensibleUnits Turns Measurements into Everyday Terms

Sensible Units - Logo

The next time you see a sign while driving alerting you to road work in 500 yards, you don't have to wonder exactly whether or not the work is at the top of the next hill or at the bottom of the next hill, you can just know that 500 yards is roughly 4 and a half soccer pitches. When you're shopping for an apartment and you read an online ad that says the unit is 800 square feet, you can know that's about 5 and a half parking spaces long. Thanks to SensibleUnits.com, you can find out whether that extra parking space is within your price range.

Admittedly, it's not easy when someone says that their house is "on a 2 acre plot" to really get a feel for what that means. I think everyone knows what mean by their house is nice, but SensibleUnits.com can tell us that 2 acres is enough space for one and a half football fields, or four and a half ice hockey rinks. The service converts all major units of length, area, and mass into other units that are bit easier to visualize.

Sensible Units - Acres

The beauty of a site like SensibleUnits.com is that its far more empowering than it might immediately appear. It's certainly a handy resource to have in your bookmarks list when someone on the news rattles off an incredulous figure that you may not grasp, but it's also a method to make those figures less daunting and easier to wrap your mind around. With time, you'll listen to a story ...

Cyber Chimps? Facebook’s Not Just for Humans Anymore

The next time you add a friend on Facebook, he or she may in fact not be a person. Meet Albert, a 20-year-old male chimpanzee, who was the first ape to join the social network. He paved the way for three other chimps to follow, including Mr. Jones, Sheena, and Britney.

Now you are probably thinking the same thing I was when hearing about this story: Chimps don't know how to use computers, do they? According to scientists from The University of Northern Oregon, we're wrong. They do. These scientists have spent the last two years training Albert and his fellow primates, all members of the Pan troglodytes species, to learn online language skills in the Cyber Chimps Project.

Through this project, the four chimps can now communicate with more than a thousand symbols on Facebook. They can add friends, write text messages and even change their profile pictures. This is all possible through software designed specifically for the primates, which recognizes sign language and incorporates a touch screen.

"Although sociologists and anthropologists have used social networks as empirical research tools, Facebook will now provide a new platform for biologists to observe the chimpanzees' social skills," says Dr. John F. Marlowe, chief researcher of the study.

Marlowe says that the study shows that chimpanzees and humans both use the same area of the brain for both verbal and non-verbal communication. He also says that the study proves that chimps have a brain designed for language, which allows them to communicate with symbols.

As Facebook continues to grow as the largest social network with over 40 million profiles to date, Albert and his friends may start ...

Rumor: Amazon Hit With Denial-of-Service Attack, Again

Amazon.com was taken down by a distributed denial-of-service attack that struck the Web site's load-balancing system, according to a rumor that's begun circulating among security professionals.

According to a security professional who said he'd been in contact with one of Amazon's business-continuity executives, the DDoS attack bypassed AWS services like Amazon's S3, striking directly at the heart of Amazon's business. It's unclear how Amazon fought off the attack, which struck roughly at 10:20 AM, according to reports.

According to the rumor, the load balancing fleet at Amazon is supposedly rated to handle a 'Black Friday" or "Cyber Tuesday" load, or the peak traffic the company should expect all year. The security professional suspected that Amazon had increased that traffic estimated by about 20 percent versus last year, meaning that the massive amount of connections had to be made to bring the site completely offline. Amazon.co.uk remained online.

Supposedly some ISPs are suffering slower service thanks to the botnet attack, but which are unknown at the moment.

Eight years ago a DDoS attack took down Amazon.com, as well as Buy.com and some others.

Incidentally, an outside representative for Amazon said that she doubts that the company will comment at the moment.

YouTube’s New Channel Encourages Citizen Journalism

YouTube has been used for political rants, comedy, animation, how-to, and so much more. Over time, users have been uploading videos to report events and sharing different perspectives from stories that we do not see on mainstream television. Today, Youtube announced on its blog a new channel type specifically for citizen journalists. It joins the site's existing Director, Musician, Comedy, Guru and Non-Profit channels.

The blog says that the channel is for
• People who tote around their cameras offering "on-the-scene" coverage of local news and events.
• Students producing their own weekly newscasts.
• Active community members who conduct interviews with local leaders.
• Engaged citizens who love providing commentary and analysis on important issues affecting the world at large.
• Professional journalists using YouTube as an additional outlet for their work.

If I were a local, free, newspaper I'd be strongly looking into investing in a company YouTube account and arming my multimedia team with video cameras.
