YouTube Adds Video Annotation Functionality

Here at PC Magazine, we're in the middle of the long and arduous process of weeding through contenders for our annual Top 100 Websites story. Naturally, we've come across a number of Web video sites in the process. Many of the emerging sites in the space have based themselves around some for of video annotation--letting users append footnotes to their videos or "pop-up videos," as is the parlance of our times.

Looking at all of the sites, it seemed like only a matter of time before YouTube snatched one of them up and adopted the technology for themselves--likely exactly the scenario that led many of these sites to launch in the first place. YouTube introduced their own beta version of the technology today, and fittingly, it's the smoothest implementation of video annotation that I've seen thus far.

The process of creating annotations is fairly straightforward as well. YouTube has added a blue Edit Annotations button to the pages of videos that you've uploaded. Click the button, start your video and you can add notes to the screen as it plays. Changing the bubbles is a very simple drag-and-drop process. The notes that you add are on by default, but users can turn them off, if they so please.

Social networking is moving beyond the narcissism of MySpace and Facebook. For example, take SocialVibe, a new social media platform that launched in May: The site enables participants to be sponsored by their favorite brands and raise money for the charities they believe in.

I took a spin through the site and found it to be very user-friendly. Signing up takes only about a minute. Then you choose from a list of causes, including charity:water, The Surfrider Foundation, Partnership for a Drug Free America, and the HollyRod Foundation.

The next step is to choose your sponsoring company, to help you raise funds for your cause. You can choose from popular brands such as Adobe, Coca-Cola Cherry, NBA, PowerBar, and more.

Step 3 gives you the opportunity to customize and add features to the art and media that will go with your message and to personalize a quote. This advertisement will be added to the social network of your choice.

Click Finish, and your page is immediately posted on the social network. Click on the link sent via email to start earning points--each time someone comes to visit your page, you earn more points, which raises more money for your cause. You can also increase your point amount through adding apps to your SocialVibe profile and by inviting your friends to join. And SocialVibe members have a chance to win prizes from their sponsors.
