MapWii: Find Someone to Play With

MapWii - Maryland

If you've managed to get your hands on a Nintendo Wii, consider yourself lucky. Many stores are still sold out and have no idea when they'll get more. Having one is only half the battle however; now you have to find someone to play with if you want to get your game on online. MapWii, a Google Maps mashup offers a place where Wii owners can post their Wii codes, and see who's online right now to connect with for a round of Super Smash Brothers Brawl.

I'm a bit bitter that I still don't have a Nintendo Wii, but when I do get one, MapWii can help me find new people to play with, even people in my area. The benefit to playing with people in the area is that you don't have to deal with high latency, and you can connect with people right around the corner from you. MapWii is based on Google Maps, but because you can add friends to your MapWii profile, there's a social networking element thrown in as well.

Most MapWii members have very rudimentary information about themselves, and profiles aren't very big. The goal of the service is to connect players who live near each other and want to get their game on, not to collect friends or comments. Member profiles have some basic information about the player, where they live, and their Wii code on the first tab. The next two tabs list their Wii games and Nintendo DS games, and the last tab is the user's friend-list. If you sign up for a MapWii account (completely free), you can request ...

TypeRacer Pits Your Typing Skills Against Others

TypeRacer - Race

Back in the day, Mavis Beacon made learning to type a bit more fun. One of the games that I remember from Mavis Beacon put you in a car, typing as fast as you can while a challenger raced you to the finish line. The faster your typed, the faster your car moved. TypeRacer takes that idea to the next level by putting the game on the Web and letting you race against other online players.

TypeRacer is a fun way to test your typing skills. The game takes lines from poetry, lyrics from songs, movie quotes, and other famous statements and gives them to you to type. Speed and accuracy are important, and your overall performance is judged using both. If you make a typing mistake, your car screeches to a halt until you fix the error. TypeRacer plays like a racing game. You sit at the starting line while other players from around the world join the match. The clock counts down, and when it hits zero, your cursor becomes active and you begin typing.

TypeRacer - Race Start

You can see your progress as you type; your car (a Volkswagen Beetle) speeds across the screen while you type, and your competitors either fall behind or blaze past you depending on how quickly they type. Each player has to type the same passage of text, and the first one to finish the passage gets to the finish line first. When you hit the finish line, your average speed in words per minute is displayed next to your car, along with anyone else who's already ...
