
If you've managed to get your hands on a Nintendo Wii, consider yourself lucky. Many stores are still sold out and have no idea when they'll get more. Having one is only half the battle however; now you have to find someone to play with if you want to get your game on online. MapWii, a Google Maps mashup offers a place where Wii owners can post their Wii codes, and see who's online right now to connect with for a round of Super Smash Brothers Brawl.
I'm a bit bitter that I still don't have a Nintendo Wii, but when I do get one, MapWii can help me find new people to play with, even people in my area. The benefit to playing with people in the area is that you don't have to deal with high latency, and you can connect with people right around the corner from you. MapWii is based on Google Maps, but because you can add friends to your MapWii profile, there's a social networking element thrown in as well.
Most MapWii members have very rudimentary information about themselves, and profiles aren't very big. The goal of the service is to connect players who live near each other and want to get their game on, not to collect friends or comments. Member profiles have some basic information about the player, where they live, and their Wii code on the first tab.
