Apple Patents Second Life-esque Virtual Store

Filed under: Review, apple - 21 Apr 2008

applevirtualstore.gifTake this one with a grain of salt. Apple likes to file a patent for every half-deranged idea that comes into its designers' heads during self-induced fever dreams. But heck, surely people laughed at the two Steves when they first began devoting all of their free time to cobbling together a desktop computer in the garage.

The company's latest patent, "Enhancing Online Shopping Atmosphere," deals with concerns (whose, we're not sure) that online shopping is a touch too "sterile and isolating." Apparently buying Viagra and creepy pornography lacks that certainly friendly mom-and-pop touch of real-life storefronts.

The patent is for a virtual world storefront, complete with avatars and changing weather patterns designed to bring some of the real-world crowd who are rage-induced when trying to pick up a cord at the always-packed Apple store in Soho. Thanks, Steve!
