Will AOL “Women’s Lifestyle” Site Challenge Yahoo! Shine?

Is AOL taking the tough-love approach with Yahoo!?

Though AOL is rumored to be among those companies eager to steal Yahoo! away from Microsoft's merger-hungry clutches, a recent online job posting suggests that AOL is looking to start a "women's lifestyle" Web site that would compete with Yahoo!'s Shine, a similar site that launched in March.

A Friday posting on journalismjobs.com is looking for a Web editor "with a broad range of interests, strong writing voice, at least five years of editing experience, and an old box of Sassy mags in her mom's attic."

(In a little case of six degrees of lifestyle magazines, one of Sassy's founding editors was Jane Pratt, who also founded the now defunct Jane magazine, which was later edited by Brandon Holley, who is now editing Yahoo! Shine.)

The Web site's new editor will also need to know "what makes content on the web sticky" and have the ability to "toss around other buzzwords that might impress and/or confuse us."

The ad doesn't explicitly mention AOL, but the contact e-mail is for someone who has posted other job ads online for AOL and its related Web sites. Ground-breaking topics will include style (fashion, makeup and home décor), pop culture, food, health, female-focused politics, bargain tips, relationship advice, sex, how-to, and humor.

"We're looking for someone who doesn't need an extra blue book to tactfully explain why Renee Zellweger is endearing yet freaky, and Amy Sedaris is freaky yet brilliant," the ad says.

Uh, OK.

Yahoo!'s Shine has a similar approach, but still leaves something to be desired in the content department.
