Some entirely too ingenious hackers have found a reference to the rumored D3X deep within the bowels of Nikon’s D3 firmware. The reference includes a list of resolutions available to the upcoming shooter, and it’s apparently set to max out at a potentially Higgs Boson-in…

Ready for some honesty? We can think of a good handful of timepieces that we’d buy before we dropped $629.95 on that catastrophe, but for folks with pants too slim and hands too full to carry around a separate cellphone, we suppose it’s a so-so alternative. The EGP-WP98 claims to be the first qu…

Ice Cube Interview: Silverlight-Powered UVNTV.com

icecube.jpg
Ice Cube has had a varied career. One of the pioneers of gangster rap, he's also a successful film and TV actor. His newest role finds him partnered up with long-time friend and hip-hop producer DJ Pooh to redefine Internet TV.

Their site, UVNTV.com (UVN stands for "U View Network"), which launched in early January of this year, aims to revolutionize the way we watch real-time video content online: It's part TV service, part social network, a place where you can tune in to see content ranging from hip-hop videos to video-game previews in real time or on demand. You can also create your own profile to interact with other UVNTV members or upload video content of your own.

UVNTV.com is one of the first sites to employ the new Silverlight platform, Microsoft's answer to Adobe Flash. I had a chance to talk with Ice Cube (who called from the set of his new movie Comeback) and his partner DJ Pooh about their online venture using Microsoft's newest media-delivery technology.

How did the idea for UVNTV come about?

DJ Pooh: We've been messing around with the concept of Net TV for a while. We wanted to create a platform for people who didn't want to go through the "suits" to reach the public. We wanted to invent a delivery system for artists to deliver content without sacrificing integrity.

Ice Cube: This is a place where any artist, company, or individual can present their content to the fans in a real-time, unedited channel. The possibilities are endless: anyone with something to say and sell can do it here, and display it they way they ...

Syncplicity Promises Simple Synchronization, Backup

Syncplicity LogoWe can now declare 2008 the Year of Sync. Products are coming out constantly offering synchronization of files between PCs, usually with some online backup thrown in. The last couple of months have seen the announcement of SugarSync and DropBox and updates (finally) to Microsoft Live FolderShare (which is sync only, no backup).

The latest player, Syncplicity, has declared itself the "only complete solution" since it does online backup, file syncing, and sharing with others (via the Web). It even syncs documents between Google Docs and your desktop, and photos with Facebook (with plans to synchronize with Flickr soon).

The tool works like others of its ilk. Sign up for an account, install the software on all your systems (it's currently only for Windows, but Mac support is coming this summer), register the PCs, run the wizard to choose what you want to sync/backup, and let 'er rip. It'll automatically choose to back up/sync folders like My Documents if you don't specify. Like DropBox, the Syncplicity software integrates with Windows Explorer or the MacOS Finder, indicating what files are synced with a checkmark on the file icon.

The Google Docs sync is currently limited to working with your Microsoft Word .doc files, but it's a great touch. You can do the same with the free service DocSyncer, which also includes your Excel and PowerPoint files, but that's only really meant for one computer. As Syncplicity adds more services and support, no doubt it'll include the other file types, and you'll have ...

Google Fights Child Porn? Good Luck, Guys

...Your're gonna need it. A story today by Reuters claims that the search giant will use the same image-recognition tools that it uses on its YouTube site to automate the process of scanning millions of images for child porn.

That's a noble ambition. But here's the problem. On Friday, we told you (and, in an email, Google) exactly where to find copyrighted movies stored on its servers. We also relayed the same information to Veoh. Instead of being forced to track down this content on their own servers, the story handed the data to both companies on a plate.

As of Tuesday, from what I can see, all of the Veoh-hosted movies disappeared. But Google has left the pirated videos untouched, including the specific example I called out in my story. I can't tell whether this is apathy on Google's part, a lack of communication, or some sort of "not invented here" reluctance to use outside information. Maybe the studios themselves are uploading, too: "For all of the content we host - whether from premium content providers or creative end-users - we require the content provider to hold all necessary rights to the material," according to Google spokesman Gabriel Stricker.

So which is it? As English journalists often write, "I think we should be told."
