BitTorrent President Slams Comcast Critics

BitTorrent on Tuesday shot down suggestions that Comcast would not follow through with its recent promise to work with the file-sharing site and overhaul its network management policies.

"We've got commitments from the highest levels of Comcast," BitTorrent president and co-founder Ashwin Navin said. "It's not like they've broken promises with us, so we don't have any issue there."

After months of back and forth over cable's treatment of file-sharing services, Comcast and BitTorrent last month reached an agreement in which Comcast agreed to alter its network management practices, and BitTorrent acknowledged that Comcast has the right to police its own network.

Though Comcast and BitTorrent have been talking to each other about network management for more than two years, they ramped up discussions shortly after a February FCC hearing held at Harvard Law School, Navin said.

Both sides wanted to figure out "how can we really achieve the goal [of making] this network a better experience," he said.

BitTorrent joined an FCC petition that asked the commission to examine Comcast's network management techniques, but "all along the way, the folks that we'd been working with [at Comcast] and I were thinking, 'We could've just avoided this,'" according to Navin.

A major piece of the deal was Comcast agreeing to increase the capacity of its network in the upstream. "That's a critical initiative for all kinds of applications - P2P and BitTorrent being one, but applications like YouTube and MySpace," Navin said. "Fundamentally, Web 2.0 means users contributing to content, [so] upload capacity is a key barrier."

In addition, Comcast's "policy of treating our protocol differently will be eradicated by 2008," ...

Flickr Adds Video Uploading

Flickr announced this afternoon the long awaited addition of video capabilities to the video sharing site. The launch, occurring at 6:00 PM ET, will roll out the new features to Flickr sites worldwide, in a total of eight languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and traditional Chinese.

Despite the relatively large nature of the announcement, the Yahoo-owned photo sharing site was careful not to roll out the addition as a new site or standalone feature, instead opting for a more subtle integration into its existing platform.

Videos uploaded to the site appear in users' galleries alongside still photos, but can be played inline as a thumbnail or expanded out for larger viewing. The Flash-based videos are designated from standard still images by a small "Play" triangle located in the lower left-hand side of the image thumbnail.

Flickr has also carried over a number of the site's existing features to be applied to the videos, including tagging, geotagging, and the ability to share clips as a set or by embedding code in third-party Web sites and blogs.

Despite the former, a Flickr representative was careful to point out that the site has no plans to compete with Google's YouTube or Yahoo! Video, a statement echoed in the relatively subtle implementation of the new feature. Instead, Flickr hopes that the new feature will serve as a natural extension of its existing services, aimed at sharing amongst relatively small groups of friends and family.

Those looking to release viral videos via the site will be hampered by uploading limitations. Users are unable to upload videos longer than 90 seconds or larger than 150MB, ...
