No Partition Magic? No Problem!

No Partition Magic? No Problem!

Q: I have been using Symantec's Partition Magic 8.0 to repartition disks in Windows XP. But it does not run in Vista and Symantec has no upgrade for it to support Vista. What tool has taken up the mantle to support disk repartitioning in Windows Vista? - Howard Pribble.

A: Let's take a look at why Symantec didn't bother with Vista support. Right-click Computer and choose Manage. Select Disk Management from the list at left. Right-click the drive that you want to partition. Hey, what's that on the menu? "Shrink Volume"?!

That's right, non-destructive partition resizing is built into Vista. I wouldn't play around without making a backup, but it looks quite usable. Once you've shrunk the partition you can right-click in the empty space, make it into a partition, and format it. Conversely you could delete an unwanted partition and then use "Extend Volume" to make the partition preceding it fill the space. You can't do elaborate things like move a partition the way you could in Partition Magic, and you can't stack up multiple operations to perform in "batch" mode. But Vista's built-in seems to do the job. - Neil J. Rubenking.

Video Desktop Background in Vista

Video Desktop Background in Vista

Q: I have an odd question. Recently thinking of how I could have the "fanciest" computer, I stumbled on the idea of having a movie set as the desktop. So, my question is, is there any software that would allow you to do this in Windows? - Matt Anderson.

A: You can set any picture you want as your desktop background, so you could just use a nice big detailed picture of a movie set. But I think that may not be what you had in mind. In Vista, the desktop background can be a movie, specifically a file in the WMV format. Right-click the Desktop, choose Personalize, and choose Desktop Background. Note that it says "Click a picture or video to make it your desktop background". Browse to the location of the desired video, select it, and you've got a "live" background. Be warned, it can be awfully distracting! - Neil J. Rubenking.
