Boycott Fever: eBay Alternatives

While the debate about the recent eBay boycott's impact on the auction site's listings is likely to continue for some time, one thing is certain: Thanks to the recent changes implementing in the wake of Meg Whitman's exit, a lot of power sellers are jumping ship for greener pastures. After our recent post on the topic of the auction site allegedly inflated its posting numbers, we received a deluge of responses from outraged sellers, many of whom included a list of the competitor sites they would be moving to.

We're not necessarily advising users to take their business elsewhere, but it never hurts to take a close look at the competition--something that eBay has received surprisingly little of over the years. Below are some of the alternatives that have been brought to our attention by eBay expats. If you know of any others, please let us know in Comments.

Amazon: As the Web's number-one retailer, Amazon is the obvious choice for disillusioned eBay sellers. Although the site doesn't offer an auction feature anymore, its Stores section is a terrific place for sellers to pawn new and used goods. Best of all, no listing fee.

Audiogon: This audio site features a place for members to buy and sell used hardware. One former eBay seller who has given his business almost entirely to this site and Amazon noted that Audiogon, whose tagline is "The High End Audio Community," offers listings for a flat fee of $8--unlike eBay, which takes a percentage off of the final sales price of products.

Divide All By 1,000 in Excel

Divide All By 1000 in Excel

Q:Please explain how to move the decimal comma three places to the left; in other words, to divide by 1,000 all the numbers on several Excel worksheets. - Richard Pike.

A:Here's how to divide all the cells within a range by 1,000. First, pick a cell outside that range, enter the number 1000, and copy it to the clipboard. Now highlight all the cells that should be changed. From the menu choose Edit | Paste Special. In Excel 2007, click the Paste button on the Home ribbon and choose Paste Special. In the Operation section of the resulting dialog choose Divide and click OK. Done!

Well, not quite done. This technique has side effects for cells that don't contain numeric constants. Text-only data is unaffected, but blank cells will be replaced by 0. Excel 2003 (but not 2007) will strip out hyperlinks. The biggest problem is that Excel will modify formulas, adding "/1000". If the inputs to the formula were constants that themselves got divided by 1,000, the formula will now yield a wrong answer.

To avoid these side effects, we'll limit the Paste Special operation to cells that contain numeric constants. After copying the constant 1,000 to the clipboard and highlighting the region containing the data that should be divided by 1,000, press Ctrl+G to invoke the Goto dialog. Click the Special button and check the Constants option, then un-check Text, Logicals, and Errors below it, leaving only Numbers checked. After you click OK, only the cells containing numeric constants remain highlighted. When you do the Paste Special with division ...
