Allow EXE Attachments in Outlook

Allow EXE Attachments in Outlook

This question from reader Steven came in for PC Magazine lead analyst Neil Rubenking:

How do I set my Outlook 2003 to receive an exe file? Outlook automatically blocks this out. Our Family sends a lot of e-cards which have an exe extension.

Neil's answer, after the jump.

You can roll back to an earlier Outlook behavior. It still will force you to save the file to disk before launching, but it will let you save it to disk. This tweak is well buried and requires a minor Registry tweak. Here's what you do:

Make sure Outlook is not running. Click Start, click Run, enter REGEDIT. Navigate the Registry key tree at left just as you would the folder tree in Windows Explorer. Your goal is the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security. If you're using Office 2007, substitute 12.0 for 11.0. With this key highlighted right-click in the right-hand pane and choose New | String value. Name the new value Level1Remove. Double-click it to change its data. Enter a list of extensions you want to unblock, separated by semicolons, with no spaces. For example ".exe;.url" (no quotes). Click OK and shut down REGEDIT.

You'll sometimes see advice to backup the Registry (overkill) or backup the key that you're changing, so you can undo your changes later. In this case, undoing your changes is a simple matter of deleting the Level1Remove key, so backup isn't necessary.

Keep in mind that this restriction exists for security reasons. Even if an e-mail seems to come from a family member, it could have been sent by a virus. Or the family member's computer could be ...

TechFest: Researchers Talk Music, Collaborative Search, Workflow

Microsoft kicked off its seventh annual TechFest this week in Redmond, where the company's research teams emerge from the labs to display their latest technologies. Here's a look at just a few of the technologies demoed at the conference:

Music Steering Project
Researchers Frank Seide and Lie Liu previewed their Music Steering Project, a music application that analyzes audio content to build a playlist of similar music for MP3 devices. Internet radio station Pandora has a similar service, but music steering differs from Pandora's offering in that it uses software to analyze songs, whereas Pandora has a "large army of music specialists that listen to every song and create attributes," Seide said in a Microsoft video.

Collaborative Search
Collaborative search allows you to collaborate with friends, family or co-workers while searching the Web. The offering has three components: search together; split search; and peeking, Microsoft's Merrie Morris told Channel 9. With search together, users logged into Windows Live Messenger can share searches. Morris and her mother shared search information they found on diabetes-friendly recipes, which were displayed on a side menu under the photos. She also searched for hybrid car information with her husband, and search together displayed the terms her husband had already searched to avoid duplications. With split search, half the results for hybrid car searches would be sent to Morris, and half would be sent to her husband so they would not be perusing the same sites. Finally, peeking allows Morris to click on her mother or husband's picture and look at the Web site they are currently browsing. Privacy settings, however, allow you to choose who can use this feature, she said. ...
