Alien or zombie threat averted: the spy satellite has been destroyed… probably

Just like the Navy told us, they shot that nasty satellite out of the sky with the kind of laser-like precision they’ve been claiming they’re capable of for years. At right around 10:30 that evening, expensive missiles were fired from the deck of the USS Erie, traveling in…

Back in our day we had to use these things called “laptops” to produce music, but now it seems like any kid off the street can rock out with a jailbroken iPhone and some Red Bull. Put two of these ADD-addled youngsters together with a DS Phat-toting fr…

Games for Zune details, hands-on

We got a chance to check out the first functioning games for Zune and were able to reply a few — but not many — questions about how that thing’s bound to play out.

For starters, first-gen Zunes don’t seem to be ruled out by any means, but it’s going to be dependent on the game controls. Za…

Nubrella: tomorrow’s fashion mistake, nowadays!

that is frankly brilliant. A hands-free umbrella is perfect for walking to work while yapping on your phone with one hand and cradling a cup of coffee with the other. Unfortunately it’s just never going to construct it past the “my friends will laugh at me” stage, considering they will. They wil…

Just In Case: Yahoo! Provides Severance Package Details

Filed under: Review, search - 20 Feb 2008
sev%20package.jpg

Take heart, Yahoo! employees. If Microsoft buys your company and fires you all without good reason, you'll be entitled to at least four months severance pay!

Yahoo! responded to reports of a Microsoft proxy fight Tuesday by filing paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that details how much money its employees will get in the event of a "change of control" at the company.

It's nothing too groundbreaking. If Microsoft (or AOL, News Corp., Facebook, or Hannah Montana) purchases Yahoo! and systematically axes employees without cause or good reason, those employees will be entitled to receive their current salaries for four to 24 months, depending on seniority.

Fired workers will also be eligible for reimbursements between $3,000 and $15,000 for outplacement services (or job transition service), also depending on seniority. I'm guessing Yahoo!-sponsored shopping sprees and copious trips to the bar are not covered under job transition services.

Employees will also continue to receive health insurance for the duration of their severance and receive accelerated vesting of stock options.

None of this will be of much concern, however, if Microsoft keeps the Yahoo! employees around. Microsoft executives have expressed an interest in working with Yahoo! engineers, but no word on how a combined Microsoft-Yahoo! might affect those lower on the pay scale.

Microsoft Alerts Users about Vista SP1 Bug

SP1_Vista_update_problem.jpgIt appears that Microsoft's woes with Vista aren't quite over yet. According to the company's official Windows Vista blog, a bug in the SP1 update is the latest in a mounting load of blunders.

A number of users reported problems resulting from the service pack prerequisite KB937287. After receiving reports of the error, Nick White, Microsoft's Product Manager, quickly responded by notifying customers that a decision has been made to "temporarily suspend automatic distribution of the update to avoid further customer impact while we investigate possible causes." Microsoft says that only a small number of users has been effected and that the company is presently working to crack the problem and put the update back online as soon as possible.

If uou are experiencing this issue, use system restore to correct it or contact 1-866-PC-Safety for help with troubleshooting. Additional guidance will be available via Microsoft's free Update Support Center shortly.
