CNN iReport: Citizen Journalism Makes it Big

iReport - Logo There are a number of citizen journalism sites out there that let everyday people eport on the events in their neighborhoods and communities. Those sites range from the weak and rant-filled like LiveLeak to the professional and well organized like NowPublic.

CNN is stepping into the fray with its new citizen journalism site, iReport. The site was launched yesterday, and offers a host of tools that let the public share their thoughts and video on issues ranging from local news and community updates to national and international events.

CNN's iReport has been in the works for a while. All of the content at iReport is generated by the members, and the service invites anyone interested in taking part in the project to sign up. Members can produce their own videos, political and editorial cartoons, photos, and upload them to iReport to share with the rest of the community. CNN will even reach out to iReport members they feel are doing well and feature their content on the air.

It's no surprise that the bulk of the videos and commentary at iReport have to do with the Presidential primaries and other political topics, but other members upload photos and videos to discuss news events in their backyards. One member posted video of brush fires that broke out near his hometown, and another has a photo gallery of Greensburg, Kansas before and after the storms that passed through that area a few weeks ago.

Yahoo! Buys Video Advertising Company Maven

You've got to hand it to Yahoo! In spite of the search company's recent tough times and the fact that all the press on them lately has been focused on Microsoft potentially hostile bid, Yahoo! keeps on trucking, buying up companies willy-nilly, like a good media conglomerate.

Earlier in the week, Yahoo! announced its latest acquisition: the online video platform provider, Maven, for a cool $160 million. Maven manages, monetizes, and distributes video for more than 30 media outlets, including Fox News, Sony BMG, CBS Sports, Hearst, Gannett, Scripps Networks, and The Financial Times.

"Video is projected to be the fastest growing segment of the online ad market, and Maven will significantly help advance Yahoo!'s strategy, expanding the video opportunity for publishers and increasing the efficiency and effectiveness for advertisers," said Yahoo!'s EVP, Global Partner Solutions, Hilary Schneider. "This is a big win for publishers, advertisers, consumers and for Yahoo!"

The buy is aimed at increasing Yahoo!'s viability as a conduit for online advertising, a space largely dominated by its main competitor, Google. Ultimately, however, it may just sweeten the deal for Microsoft, which clearly has an eyes on the online video prize.
