Is News Corp. Looking to Buy Yahoo?

Looks like Microsoft isn't the only company with money to burn on an ailing search company. There's apparently a lot of talk among hedge funds looking to outbid the Redmond company for control over Yahoo!

TechCrunch is adding fuel to the fire by reporting that Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. is looking to escalate this little struggle into a bidding war. It cites the media company's talk of a merger between Yahoo! and MySpace dating to the middle of last year, a deal that would have involved News Corp. selling off the social networking company in exchange for 25 percent of Yahoo'!s stock. In light of recent events, however, Murdoch may be thanking his lucky platinum-covered stars that the deal didn't go down.

Perhaps it's all payback for Microsoft's recent purchase of a chunk of MySpaces's major competitor, Facebook. Or could Murdoch still be miffed that Bill G. never put him in his top five?
