If you want to start a social news platform, you need three things: a platform, a community, and news worth reading. But what do you do if you have the news, don't want to build a copycat platform, and need a community? Current, the Web and TV news and information network, is expanding its social news offerings by partnering with Facebook. The Current News Facebook application allows Facebook users to rate and vote on stories to personalize their own news and customize each other's feeds.

The beauty of social news is that you can personalize your news feeds. If you're interested in politics and technology but not sports, you can customize a feed that includes the things you want to read, but excludes the articles you're not interested in. Instead of building a Digg clone and duplicating the news at Current.tv, the site partnered with Facebook to bring the news to the people instead of asking the people to come to the news.

This is a smart move for Current. Social-news sites have been struggling with how to blend more social networking with their news, and how to get their users to interact with one another. Current got around the issue entirely; Current has the news, and Facebook has the social networking.

Facebook users who sign up for the Current News widget can customize their own feeds, but can also allow their friends to become "editors," meaning their collective votes decide what shows up in everyone's news feeds.
