Keep Your Mac Apps Patched with AppUpdate

AppUpdate - Download

It's annoying to find out weeks after the fact that you're using an old version of your favorite IM client or Web browser, and that the new version has features and fixes you've been looking for. At the same time, no one wants to spend time going to multiple Web sites, checking for updates of each of their favorite applications. Enter AppUpdate, a Mac OS X Dashboard widget that keeps track of your applications and how far out from the most recent version you are. The app will also give you links to download the most recent versions, and supports multiple download sources.

Linux users can just use YUM or apt-get to download updates for the programs installed on their systems. Windows users are either out of luck or have to go hunting for shareware that'll update all of their apps for them. Mac users have been out in the cold; if it's not an Apple application and it's not in Software Update, they're out of luck. With AppUpdate, Mac users can keep track of most apps they have on their system and check with a single glance whether they're missing an update and where they can download it.

Most programs these days will automatically check for updates, but if you want more control over how and when you update your applications, AppUpdate can help. Since the tool runs as a dashboard widget, you can immediately check for updates whenever you want. When you open AppUpdate, the program checks for updates and patches to your programs at Version Tracker. The app will also check MacUpdate and Apple's software directory. ...

Google today announced the release of iGoogle Themes API, a feature that allows iGoogle users to create their own themes for Google's start-page app. Designers can also share their themes with other users, and they'll be searchable in the company's new themes directory.

Google said in a press release issued this morning:

Developers are an important part of our innovation ecosystem and we're always striving to release tools to help them innovate in new directions that will ultimately make the web richer for all users. With the iGoogle Themes API, developers can design and share a theme with the tens of millions of iGoogle users around the world, providing even more options for users to customize their iGoogle experience.

Google is launching the feature by offering custom themes from designers Yves Behar, Mark Frauenfelder, Troy Lee, and John Maeda.

More info on the new feature is available on Google's official blog.
