Video Site VeohTV Adds Content from Hulu

Veoh could possibly be treading in litigious waters with the Thursday addition of content from Hulu.com, a video rival from NBC Universal and News Corp.

Hulu launched its private beta in late October with ad-supported content from a variety of studios, including MGM, Universal, Sony Pictures Television, Fox and NBC. Unlike Veoh, however, Hulu signed licensing deals with these providers for legal access to their content.

Veoh, which launched its beta in June, pulls streaming content from many video sources with or without a site's permission. It was sued by Universal Music Group in late summer for copyright infringement, and the case is still pending.

"We haven't heard anything from Hulu, so I can't comment on their reaction, but we do think that we can be a valuable source of distribution for their high-quality content," a Veoh spokeswoman said in an e-mail.

As a result, Veoh added Hulu content to its "TV Shows" section early Thursday morning. It will feature 21 shows from Fox, almost 60 NBC selections, four FX programs, and five each from the Sci-Fi Channel and USA Network, Veoh said.

Veoh might want to do a quick spell check, however, as promos for video from NBC's "30 Rock" tout the appearance of writer and star "Tina Frey" instead of Tina Fey.

"While we do not have a distribution partnership in place with Veoh, Hulu videos are currently available on our distribution partner sites: AOL, Comcast, MSN, MySpace and Yahoo," said Hulu spokeswoman Christina Lee. "We encourage the viral distribution of Hulu content in accordance with our terms of use."

Microsoft Office 2003 Abandons Support for Older File Formats

So much for rolling out new features. Microsoft isn't exactly going around advertising it, but if you've downloaded Service Pack 3 for your copy of Office 2003, you might have noticed that the latest release actually features decreased compatibility with old file types.

With SP3, Office 2003 has dropped support for documents created in old versions of Word, Excel, 1-2-3, Quattro, and Corel Draw, because, according to Microsoft's Support Center, "[b]y default, these file formats are blocked because they are less secure. They may pose a risk to you."

Opening up these files post-SP3 requires a trip to your Windows Service Registry. Adds Wired's Monkey Bites blog, "Which files are blocked depends a bit on your environment since network administrators can add whatever file formats they want to the registry, but by default it appears most files in formats which existed prior to Office 97 won't open."

Or, as the blog points out, you can simply use a third-party program like OpenOffice to open and convert the files to a new, readable format.

As for the validity of Microsoft's security claims, PC Magazine's contributing security editor, Larry Seltzer, had this to add (from the Security Watch blog):

File parsing is probably the area of computing most subject to security vulnerability. Extensive validation checking is necessary in order to prevent malformed files from causing errors in the software that could allow an attacker to take control of the system. You may remember, about a year ago, there was a wave of "zero-day attacks" against corporate targets using malformed data files.

Microsoft has decided that any efforts they may put into securing the file interpreters for these formats are not ...
