Norton 360 - Take Two

Norton 360 - Take Two

I got my hands on an early copy of the Norton 360 2.0 beta release and ran it through a few quick tests. For a beta version it's looking pretty darn good - but then, the standards are higher when the beta is a security product. It noticed ZoneAlarm on the test system and politely asked me to uninstall it. The installation seemed quicker than what I remember, and the streamlined preinstall scan ensured that it went smoothly.

Backup Options

Once the installation completed it assigned me one simple task - configure the backup system. But that was easy enough to do, since its recommended settings seemed perfectly logical. After that, nothing! No more worries. Oh, it did mention seven tasks that it was going to handle itself, sometime when I'm not using the computer. I peeked at an installation of the original N360; in similar circumstances it told me I was AT RISK and popped up several warnings. Looks like version 2.0 is going for the "strong silent type" award.

Quick Menus

I waited around (well, I worked on another project) for a while and sure enough it did start taking care of those tasks. But I got impatient and started looking for a way to manually clear things up. Hey, nice! The main window is still divided into four big areas, but now when the mouse is over one of them you get a quick menu of related actions. "View Details" was just the right action to show me ...

Band Loses Bid To Strip “Guitar Hero” of Song

Fear not, hair band fans--"Guitar Hero Rocks the 80s" lives on.

On Monday a federal judge in Detroit denied The Romantics' request to halt production of the video game because of copyright issues.

The Romantics filed suit in November against Guitar Hero producer Activision for improper use of its song, "What I Like About You." The Romantics, however, were not arguing that Activision had no rights to the song; the company had legally secured the rights to use a cover version of "What I Like About You." What bothered the band was that Activision had basically commissioned a cover band that was too good and sounded too much like The Romantics. The band, which has not shied away from endorsement deals in the past, apparently thought that if Activision was going to produce a song that was so similar to the original, it should have forked over more cash and licensed the original song, not the cover version. Got that?

The judge was not in agreement, and denied the request. Christmas-morning interpretations of "I Ran (So Far Away)" by A Flock of Seagulls and Poison's "Nothin' But a Good Time" are safe for all to enjoy.

Activision said in a statement that it was "pleased" with the ruling and thought The Romantics' case was "without merit."
