Facebook Allows User to Shut Off Beacon Ad SystemFacebook's Beacon advertising program took another hit Wednesday when founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologized for the mistakes the social networking site had made with the program, and announced that users will now be have an option to completely shut off Beacon. "Today we're releasing a privacy control to turn off Beacon completely," Zuckerberg wrote in a blog post. "If you select that you don't want to share some Beacon actions or if you turn off Beacon, then Facebook won't store those actions even when partners send them to Facebook." Zuckerberg acknowledged that Facebook "simply did a bad job with this release, and I apologize for it." Beacon is part of Facebook Ads and was intended to notify Facebook users of their friends' off-site activities on partner sites such as Fandango, eBay and LiveJournal. But Facebook initially made Beacon opt-out, so if you forgot to check "No Thanks" when a partner site notified you that your info was being sent to Facebook, it automatically showed up in your newsfeed. Facebook altered Beacon slightly after MoveOn launched a privacy campaign against the program, and made it opt-in. A Computer Associates report on Monday, however, revealed that info about users' purchases was still being sent to Facebook, although that data might never be published on the site. "At first we tried to make it very lightweight so people wouldn't have to touch it for it to work," Zuckerberg wrote. "The problem with our initial approach of making it an opt-out system instead of opt-in was that if someone forgot to decline to share something, Beacon still went ahead and shared it with their friends." Facebook's announcement is "a step ...

Doodlekit Helps You Build Your Own Sites For Free
A number of apps help you create your own blog or Website. Many allow you to sign up for a free blog to use to share your thoughts with the world, but if you're looking for a different kind of site, one features forums, a Paypal shopping cart, or a file uploader, you're out of luck if you're not willing to spend money--and in some cases you're out of luck, even if you are. Doodlekit boasts all of those features, offers hosting plans that include a site designer, blogging tools, search engine optimization, image galleries and uploading tools, SSL security, and more. Best of all, its basic plan is completely free.
The number of features in the basic plan, and the advanced features available in its commercial plan, set Doodlekit apart from other free, instant-site hosts. While most "create your site for free" services generally spit out a blog with a default layout, Doodlekit's free sites are remarkably well-featured. You have a bit more freedom with Doodlekit's site designer than some other services, and while you can make your site look like a blog if you choose, you also have the freedom to take your site in other directions. Doodlekit also recognizes that even the most basic site owners want information about their visitors. The service bundles site statistics with all of its plans, including the free ones. Additionally, Doodlekit members can upgrade their plans to add features and capacity at any time, without having to sign up for a new plan and migrate their sites and services. ...

FacingUp.org Helps Citizens Affect Government Spending
In less than a year, Americans will go to the polls to elect a new President and several new members of Congress. Regardless of where you fall on the political spectrum, everyone can agree that the government should spend taxpayer dollars responsibly on priorities they share with the people. FacingUp.org offers citizens an opportunity to weigh in on how taxpayer dollars are spent, giving them a way to contact their representatives in government to make sure their voices are heard. The site is sponsored by a group of Washington DC think tanks and policy groups that generally share libertarian or conservative agendas, but claims to be a non-partisan project. I'm somewhat familiar with DC policy institutes and think-tanks, and be warned: many "non-partisan" groups are founded by organizations that are very partisan. Even so, FacingUp.org can be useful to people of all political leanings.
The site offers a number of position papers and connections to other groups, but its real strength is in the tools that it offers for individuals to discuss, collaborate, and share ways to collectively approach government agencies and officials to manage the budget responsibly. The service runs a blog that advises voters on issues around fiscal responsibility, and allows citizens to interact in discussion forums where members can debate financial priorities and collaborate on methods to get through to their elected officials. When members decide to reach out to their elected officials about certain fiscal priorities or policies like weighing in on the Alternative Minimum Tax or the growing federal budget and trade deficits, FacingUp provides a number ...
