MySpace Transmissions Gives Stars Platform They So Desperately Need

MySpace might be the go-to site for many an aspiring artist, but the social networking site is turning to more established musical acts for a site that will feature video interviews, live music streams, and the option to purchase music.

The site, dubbed MySpace Transmissions, kicked off this week with selections from James Blunt, the singer-songwriter best known for his ubiquitous 2005 single "You're Beautiful."

The page currently gives users the option to listen to five songs from Blunt's latest album in their entirety. They can then purchase the whole album for $13.99 via lala.com, though MySpace does not have an exclusive partnership with the site, a MySpace spokeswoman said.

MySpace will announce plans for additional artists in the coming weeks, though "the frequency has not yet been determined," a spokeswoman said. In the meantime, it is soliciting suggestions on the Transmissions site from members. Current requests include Ryan Adams, A Tribe Called Quest and Bo Bice ...

The site is targeting more established stars for this venture because, "The bigger an artist becomes, the harder it is to truly stay connected with fans in a way that feels personal and organic," according to a spokeswoman. Transmissions will enable them to "re-connect" with fans on the site.

"I think it's much nicer not having a middleman and to have an audience and to have a direct contact to them through MySpace," Blunt said in a video interview about MySpace. "That's much more of a genuine, honest expression of how they feel about that music rather than, say, a music critic. A music critic, actually, when he writes a review is ...

Yapta Adds a Firefox Add-On

YaptaOne of my very favorite Web services, Yapta, today announced a Firefox add-on, which is good news for Linux and Mac users, as Yapta has heretofore been IE-only.

For those who aren't familiar with it, Yapta tracks plane fares for you before or after you've bought your ticket. When Yapta e-mails you to report a price dip, that's your chance to either pull the trigger on cheap tix or ask the airline to refund the difference if you've already shelled out. I used Yapta to get some money back for a flight I took last summer, and I'm now waiting for Yapta to let me know when the fare on my Christmas flight drops so I can get another refund or voucher.

This service works great, and it's an easy way to save some cash. Yapta claims to have already delivered $10 million in airfare value (I'm assuming that's money saved plus refunds). You can find out more about it from my earlier Yapta post.

Google Integrates AIM into Gmail Chat

Google continues to slowly roll out functionality to Gmail. Earlier today the app launched colored labels that are designed to help users better organize their inboxes. And prior to that, the newest version of the e-mail client (which tech pubs were quick to christen Gmail 2.0) introduced group chat and free IMAP support.

The latest feature rollout steps up app integration by letting users chat with their AOL Instant Messenger buddies in Gmail. The Chat menu, located on the left hand side of the Gmail inbox, now features a Sign Into AIM option in its drop-down menu. After entering AIM sign-in info, users' AIM buddylists will appear among their Gmail contacts.

The latest feature is available only in the English version of Gmail but will follow in other languages shortly.

BeeMP3 Helps You Find Free Tunes

Filed under: Review, cool_web_sites, search, music - 04 Dec 2007

BeeMP3 - Logo

The Web is full of free music, and BeeMP3 is intent on helping you find it. The site features an easy to use interface that allows you to search open directories and FTP servers for music that you can download with a single click. Be careful though; you'll probably find music from major artists that isn't legal to download. Still, it's a great way to find independent artists and other music that's been released for free.

BeeMP3's search technique isn't new--there are thousands of open directories out on the Web that contain music. When you visit one of them with your Web browser, you get a file listing, and you can click any of the files or folders to download the contents. Some people leave them up on purpose; others don't know they're uploading content to an open directory. Either way, with the right search strings, you can search any engine for mp3 files in those open directories, and BeeMP3 does this for you easily.

BeeMP3's interface is simple enough; it works like a search engine. Simply type in the name of a song, artist, or album and BeeMP3 will return any hits it finds. You can narrow the search down to go by artist, song. I searched for some obscure artists and turned up multiple pages of search results. Popular artists and top 40 bands are represented as well, but be careful. You'll probably find copyrighted music at BeeMP3, so download carefully and try to keep yourself out of legal trouble.

BeeMP3 boasts over 800,000 mp3s in its database, and ...

Nokia’s eco-friendly 3110 Evolve

The just-announced 3110 Evolve candybar from Nokia is big on features. Not features of the gizmo sort, though — fairly the opposite, actually — rather, features of the “Mother Nature will thank you” sort. As its name suggests, the phone appears to be an evolved version of t…
