Google wants your data.

The search engine giant is reportedly looking to launch a service that would allow computer users to store their hard-drive info on Google's servers. Users could access these files via the Internet from computers and mobile devices with one password, and share the information with friends, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Google currently offers storage separately via its Docs applications, Gmail, and Picasa (the Web-based photo-hosting offering), as well as the option to purchase up to 400GB of additional storage. This new endeavor, however, will reportedly pull those services together via a single search box.

Google does not "have anything new to announce right now," according to a spokesman. He would acknowledge only that "cloud computing is going mainstream" and that "storage is an important component of making Web apps fit easily into consumers' and business users' lives."

In September, Microsoft unveiled a unified installer to enable one-stop downloads of recently updated Windows Live applications, reportedly intended to assist with this "cloud computing"--a fancy name for software and services delivered via the Internet.

Cloud computing at Microsoft is viewed as an effort to compete against Google, which has moved in on what has traditionally been considered Microsoft territory with its Google Apps program.

Earlier today I was having a conversation with one of my coworkers about Google's inability to come up with good product names. For all the unquestionable brilliance contained in the company's various teams, the company has opted out of the clever-name game by giving apps titles such as "Maps" and "Docs and Spreadsheets." Froogle was around for a bit, but the company switched it to the far more benign Google Product Search.

Maybe there's some sense to this. After all, the Web 2.0 race to out-clever one another has resulted in some truly awful names, as we've seen time and again. Perhaps what we need are product names that actually, you know, tell us clearly and succinctly what the products do.

And then there's the fact that when Google does get clever, it winds up with names such as RE<C, which the company has bestowed upon its latest effort to do less evil.

The RE<C initiative seeks to lower the price of renewable, clean energies, like solar, making them cheaper than dirty alternatives, like coal--ergo RE<C, or "renewable energy less than coal." In a conference call on the subject today, Google co-founder Larry Page offered an immediate apology for the "cheesy name." Not only is it cheesy, but the damned thing has the potential to wreak a lot of havoc on HTML coders worldwide.

As usual with Google, the negative are far outweighed by the positives. It's hard to get too preoccupied by cheesiness when measuring the potential impact of such an initiative. "Our goal is to produce a gigawatt of energy using renewable resources," Page said, during today's press conference.

Only a few short months ago, the instructional Web video site SuTree was still in beta; at the time, it hosted over 5,300 videos on topics ranging from rolling sushi to learning to knit. I don't always (or even usually) agree with John Dvorak, but his latest column on PCMag.com, Why Social Networks Stink, is dead on. He points out that social networks are basically marketing machines, providing companies a way to shill their products "socially" to the networks' huge user bases. All the social stuff that goes on is just to get users to come back.

TechCrunch had a related post up last week by a "viral marketer" who outlines his strategies for getting his clients' videos onto the Top Viewed list. His tactics are ingenious, despicable, and, according to him, effective. The post caused quite a stir, too--if you think networks like YouTube and MySpace are truly socially driven, you're in for a surprise.

The really yucky part about all of this is that a huge chunk of social network users are likely not web-savvy enough to even know they're being marketed to. Indeed, if the TechCrunch comments are any indication, a good chunk of TC readers didn't know this kind of marketing- and PR-driven gaming was going on.

It is, and is typically happening before the social network companies themselves figure out a way to capitalize on it.

I love my local radio stations; there's always something entertaining to listen to.
