FCC: Deals Between Apartments, Cable Companies Anti-Competitive

Good news for apartment dwellers craving a little video competition: The FCC on Wednesday voted to ban cable companies from striking exclusive deals with apartment complexes and housing developments. The move basically paves the way for phone providers now offering video service--such as Verizon and AT&T--to potentially steal cable customers who were previously locked into getting a service from one provider. The FCC found that the practice is anti-competitive and a deterrent to new entrants.

Cable provider Comcast was not pleased. The FCC's move will result in "higher prices for services and years of litigation and uncertainty for consumers [because] the significant concessions building owners have been able to bargain for on behalf of their residents will be lost," the company said in a statement.

Verizon was, predictably, giddy.

"Millions of consumers live in apartments, condos or other private developments, and, until now, many of them have been denied the benefits of video competition as a result of exclusive access agreements used by cable providers to shield themselves from competition," Susanne Guyer, Verizon senior vice president of federal regulatory affairs, said. "The FCC decision will provide access to new competitive options for residents of these properties and encourages further deployment of broadband networks."

I haven't run into this problem too much in New York, probably because Time Warner Cable rules my life, but two of my former apartment buildings in DC required me to use certain providers; and they quickly became the bane of my existence. My current NYC apartment building, however, does require residents to have a Verizon phone line to connect to our buzzer system. Perhaps the FCC can do something about that?

Facebook Board Member Talks OpenSocial

Silicon Alley Insider's Peter Kafka sat down with Facebook investor Jim Breyer, and managed to squeeze out some pretty interesting points. Remember that rumored $500 million investment that Facebook supposedly scored after getting the $240 million from Microsoft? Yeah, well, that didn't actually happen. Also, the company is going to hold off on its IPO, at least until 2009.

Most interesting in terms of late breaking news, however, is what Kafka had to say about all this Google OpenSocial business. "We're not afraid of Google/MySpace/Ning/etc," said Kafka. "And we're not going to be 'out-opened' by them." That said, the site is also not averse to jumping on the OpenSocial bandwagon, should the proper opportunity present itself.

Oprah Conquers YouTube

oprah.jpg

Now that Oprah's Oxygen network has been snapped up by NBC Universal, the talk show queen is setting her sights on YouTube.

Oprah unveiled her own YouTube channel Friday, which will feature behind-the-scenes video shot by O herself, green-room footage, and pearls of wisdom from Oprah's staff. At the moment, it mainly consists of teasers for upcoming shows (Celine Dion!) with a special emphasis on Tuesday's episode, which will feature the YouTube co-founders and the stars of the site's more popular videos.

I didn't realize the video of that couple re-enacting "Dirty Dancing" at their wedding was such a hit on YouTube. I'd seen it because the bride actually went to my high school, but turns out their efforts landed them some face time with Patrick Swayze. Jealous? Me neither.

Watching Oprah's staff wax poetic about Tyson the skateboarding dog is fine, I guess, but I'd much prefer old-school clips of Oprah in her big hair/bold sweater phase when she was competing with Donahue, rolling out wheelbarrows full of fat and interviewing transvestites and the women who love them. Oprah will apparently "guest edit" a few favorite videos that will appear on Nov. 5, but I'm guessing it'll be tearjerkers and celebrity moments rather than Jerry Springer-esque trash. Pity.
