Excel Bug Exterminated

Two weeks ago I reported the shocking news that Excel Can't Multiply. Later that same day Microsoft's Excel team verified that this is a realio trulio Excel bug. They even identified twelve specific floating point values (out of nine quintillion possible) that display the aberrant behavior. The team has apparently been busy, as they announced a fix today. Eventually it will be pushed out through Automatic Updates, but if you care enough to read this you'll probably want to download the hotfix right away.

To verify the bug, I had created a test workbook that divided 65,535 by each number from 1 to 65,535 and then multiplied the result the same number. Naturally this should wind up where it started, with a value of 65,535. But in over ten thousand cases it displayed 100,000 instead. On another sheet of this workbook I listed formulas that yield each of the twelve "problem" values - for example =65535-2^(-35). I installed the hotfix, rebooted the computer, opened the file and... yes! No more 100,000s! Let's hope there are no other vermin lurking in the code.
