Microsoft Updates Internet Explorer…Barely…

Filed under: Review, browsers - 04 Oct 2007

Even with its (*cough* Firefox-like) improvements, Internet Explorer 7 isn't exactly dominating the scene the way its predecessor did. However, Microsoft has just ironed out a few kinks in the app, according to ExtremeTech.

A Windows Genuine Advantage validation check will no longer be mandatory for download or install. Rather, the app can be downloaded straight from Microsoft's page. Also, in the XP version, the menu bar is not longer hidden by default--a small, but important improvement, in my opinion. While I appreciate the company's attempt to strealine things with the initial version, getting anything done in the browser was just plain maddening at first. The MSI installer has also been streamlined.

So how do these improvements stack up? Meh. As far as completely dominating Firefox, that looks like a job for IE8...or 9...From what I hear, 10 is going to be a doozy...

SellaBand: Helping Bands Sell Out, One Believer at a Time

Filed under: Review, music - 04 Oct 2007
sellaband.gif

We met with the folks at SellaBand, earlier today. I wasn't familiar with the site before this week, but apparently I'm in the minority on this one. Kyle had, of course, because he's, like totally in a band and stuff. Apparently a lot of other people have as well, judging from the fact that the site's users have generated some $1.2 million in the year and change since it first launched.

Based in Amsterdam, Sellaband essentially offers a monetized alternative to Myspace's ever-popular band pages. The setup is basically the same (and the sites' layouts are also nearly identical). You create a profile for your band and upload songs for users to listen to. Users can then, in turn, friend you. After that is where the two begin to diverge. On SellaBand, once users have friended you, they also have the opportunity to invest or "buy shares" in your band, for $10 a piece, thus becoming, "believers."

Once a band sell 5,000 shares ($50,000) worth of themselves, the band is given the opportunity to record an album with a professional producer. Kyle referred to the site as, "venture capitalism for bands," which I think is pretty apt.

Thus far eight bands have completed the process, out of a total of some 5,100 currently signed up on the site.

Interesting side note: SellaBand's PR guy, Victor Domine, who came into our offices today, along with co-founder/music director, Dagmar Heijmans, got involved with the service after his cousin Jake Kongaika (known as Cubworld to music peeps), who was working at the Salt Lake City airport at the time, became one of the first ...

Happy Tenth B-day, Slashdot

Hard to believe, but the mega-popular tech news site, Slashdot, just turned the big 1-0. Heck, I'm pretty sure that a decade ago I was still living in a house without an Internet connection.

Network Performance Daily has an insightful little interview with the site's creator, Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda, in which the Slashdot of the year 2017 is discussed. There's some interesting insight into the balance act between user and commercial interests when running a popular but independent forum for user generated information.

In the meantime, congrats on the last 10, Slashdot. And many more. On channel four.

DRM-less in 2008?

Filed under: Review, music - 04 Oct 2007
In reference to the growing momentum behind DRM-free online music stores, Napster's Chief Operating Officer Christopher Allen just told me "The MP3 tipping point will happen in 2008." In light of the new Zune Marketplace, Amazon MP3 store, and EMI's and iTunes' experiment, perhaps he's right and next year's the year when all of our purchased music finally works on all of our hardware. Here's hoping.

New Cosmo Mobile Saves You From Small Talk

CosmoMobile.jpg If you're a nicer person than me, then you've never had a friend call you 10 minutes into an awful date with an escape plan. That said, if you're a nicer person than me, you've at least seen this trick on a Sex and the City or Friends re-run.

Thanks to Cosmopolitan's new mobile site, M.Cosmopolitan.com, you can save your friends some time by setting up a Fake Call from your mobile phone for just 99 cents. Just log on to the site, click on "Cosmo Fake Calls," and follow the step-by-step instructions to customize your excuse.

I took the service for a test run from the comfort of my couch, which served two purposes: one, it spared at least one guy's feelings (us fake callers can be sensitive too); and two, I didn't have to get all fancied up for date. Like clockwork, about 10 minutes after I requested my fake call, my phone rang. I had chosen to have a friend call me. Once I picked up the phone, the Cosmo Fake Call read me a script that I had to repeat on my end--complete with stage directions.

"You say, 'How did it go?' Now smile and nod."
"Now say, 'Oh, you want me to come down and meet you? Right now?'"
And so on...

Of course selling this whole charade is dependant on you having at least a little acting skill--and you not chickening out.

The rest of Cosmo Mobile, which launched today, includes daily horoscopes, quizzes, cocktail recipes, city guides, their dating blog, and fashion advice.

Myanmar Goes Offline

Reports have been coming in that Myanmar's government has taken the country's Internet connections offline.

These reports have been confirmed from the outside. A post on the NANOG mailing list (an insider list for Internet Service Providers) details some research that shows the following: The .mm top-level domain has disappeared from the DNS. Servers in Myanmar are unreachable The two IP address blocks allocated to Myanmar have been removed from global Internet routing tables. Myanma Post & Telecommunication appears to have shut off connections to the outside world. The apparent goal of the move is to suppress communications among protesters and the reporting of news out of the country.

Cyberhomes.com: Get School Data, Commute Times Before You Move

Cyberhomes.com

A deciding factor when looking for a new home is whether or not the area has good schools. Created by Marty Frame, former top tech exec at Realtor.com, Cyberhomes (www.cyberhomes.com) is a new Web site for parents who are looking for local school and community information before they move. Simply type in a home address, and Cyberhomes spits accurate and useful school data for all schools in the area, including average test scores, enrollment, and student/teacher ratio. Here's an example of school data.

Even if you're not a parent, users can also learn about the neighborhood and community, including the weather, economy, commute times, diversity, even air/water quality. Man, this would have come in handy before my move! Cyberhomes will be out of beta in November 2007.

Yet another anti-snoring pillow on the horizon

Filed under: Misc. GadgetsAs whether there weren’t adequate anti-snoring options (let alone ones that fall in the pillow category) already out there, Daryoush Bazargani, professor of computer science at the University of Rostock, has conjured up another. Reportedly, the inventor has developed a “com…
