Everyone's had times when they've sent an e-mail and wished they could be notified when the recipient reads it. Many e-mail applications allow you to send "return receipts;" so when the reader opens the message or deletes the message, they're prompted to send you a notification. Unfortunately, the recipient can always say no, and you're left in the dark. SpyPig, on the other hand, doesn't give the reader a choice. The service borrows some technology that spammers use to see if their messages are actually getting to your inbox, and puts it to use for you.
One way spammers know that messages have made it to their destinations (and subsequently that they shouldn't remove you from their lists) is by embedding images in their messages that load as soon as you click on the message. Even if you're going to flag the e-mail as junk, if the image inside the message gets a chance to load, a unique identifier can be sent back to the spammer that verifies that your address is real, valid, and actively read. If it sounds underhanded, it should. There are ways around this, but more on that later.

SpyPig uses the same technology to let you know when someone you've sent a message to opens it and reads it. Give SpyPig your e-mail address, the subject line of your message, and select an image to embed, and the service spits out code that you can paste into your e-mail before you send it. Then just type your message like normal and send it to your unwitting recipient.

Most sites on the Web that offer image hosting are very picky about the amount of bandwidth you use, what types of photos you upload, and how long they stay active. If you want more control, you can either pay for image hosting from a service such as Flickr or Photobucket, or host your photos yourself on your own Web space. What do you do if you want some control over the types and longevity of the photos you upload but you don't want to spend a lot of money? Simplebucket wants to fill that gap. The service offers simple, one-click image hosting with no ads, no registration hassles, and lots of features.

Simplebucket's homepage is, as the name implies, simple. You can add up to five files to your upload queue. One click browses your system for images to upload, another click adds them to your queue. Fill in your e-mail address, accept the terms of service, and a final click submits the files for upload and fires an e-mail off to your address with your upload information and an admin link to your uploaded photo. Using the service is that simple.

Simplebucket has conditions for the types of images that you upload. The service lays down the ground rules out of the gate: no pornography, no offensive material, no ads or banners. (It also claims to know where I sleep, but I'm not sure about that.) The terms of service are standard: not to upload anything illegal or that would get you--and Simplebucket--in ...

If you're looking for a video-sharing experience that's a little off the beaten path, look no further than DNAStream. The site isn't powered by user contributions or comments--the people behind DNAStream TV have the videos already and provide them to you to watch and rate. You can sign up and rate videos as they play, or you can head to specific channels to watch certain kinds of videos. As you rate, DNAStream builds your "DNA" of taste, and as the service learns what you like, it presents you only with videos that it think you'll like.

Everything at DNAStream plays in your entire browser window, and you can expand the videos into full-screen mode to feel like you're watching television. Sadly, the videos are all Flash and likely pulled from other video-sharing sites, so the quality is pretty low. Even so, you can tweak the option to display the video in 4:3 or 16:9, which makes a difference depending on the video you're watching.
The people behind DNAStream obviously took a design cue from Joost in how to present video on the Web, with all of the bells and whistles that people might like, in the most unobtrusive way. At the same time, you don't need to download an app to use DNAStream; everything works through your browser. Your Play, Pause, and Volume controls appear when you click on the video. At the bottom, you can click for a directory of Internet videos in a variety of different categories, from animation, dance and music, art, trailers and spots, and more.

While reviewing Twitter clone Jaiku, I came across a neat Internet messaging bot called IMified, which lets you interact with a bunch of different Web applications--Google Calendar, Backpack, Remember the Milk, Blogger, Movable Type, and more--via, you guessed it--IM. Send an AIM, MSN/Windows Live Messenger, or Gtalk/Jabber (and later Yahoo! Messenger) instant message with any text at all to the screen name IMified (IMified@imified.com for MSN), and you're signed up.
Three numbered mini IM-based apps are ready to go: Notes, Reminders, and Todos. You just enter the number prefacing them to get to these simple text-based applets. Notes is a simple way to enter text you may want to call up. Reminders asks you when you want to be reminded with the text you've put in and requires you to set your time zone on your Settings Web page. That's all the personal information you need to enter: Field for First Name and Email Address are there too, but not required. The Todos app is just a text message, too, but the added choice Completed appears when you view an entry. The real power comes when you choose My Account and start adding Web services like those mentioned earlier to your command list. When you type 4, a URL for your own Account page is sent. Go to this page, and you'll see three main tab choices: Widgets, Shortcuts, and Account Settings. For most users, Widgets will be the most interesting:
Choose any of these (so far there are 24) to make edits or posts via instant message. Many of the ...
