eBay auction reveals prototype Dreamcast Zip Drive

As at least two members of the Engadget staff can attest to, the Dreamcast was a totally bodacious system — one which has been surprisingly kept alive well past its cancelation from commercial sale by a core group of terrifically committed gamers and home-brewers. You’d think that a system whic…

PhoneCasting Brings Podcasting to Mobile Phones

PhoneCasting - Logo

You can listen to your favorite podcasts on your MP3 player, your computer, and any number of other mobile devices. But unless your cell phone can play digital audio and connect to your computer, you can't catch podcasts using nothing but the phone. PhoneCasting is a new service designed to bring podcasts to your cell phone, and to give podcasters a new method to reach out to their audiences.

PhoneCasting - Featured

PhoneCasting is bringing podcasts to mobile phones in two ways. First, the service is trying to convince podcasters that recording and publishing podcasts at PhoneCasting is a good way to draw in an audience they wouldn't get through traditional means. By giving people the option to listen to a podcast using their phones, simply by dialing a phone number, the number of listeners can increase, because the number of ways people can listen will increase as well. So far, though, PhoneCasting has only a handful of podcasts specifically created using its service.

PhoneCasting - Diggnation

PhoneCasting has another approach to building a community: The service scrubs the RSS feeds of popular free podcasts for the audio files and then uploads them to its own service. PhoneCasting assigns a telephone number to the podcast, and you can call the number to hear the most recent episode of the show. Popular podcasts such as DiggNation, National Geographic News, ChickChat Radio, and more are available for free through PhoneCasting.

Adding your podcast to PhoneCasting is easy. You can paste the RSS link into the front page and simply click "get phone ...

Adesso’s Tubes Gets a Makeover

Tubes: Redesigned

Earlier this year, I took a look at a unique app--Tubes--that simplified file-swapping and sharing. Resembling an IM window, Tubes is a collection of folders, also called tubes, where you can drop files and invite others to view and even edit them. You can also see tubes that you've been invited to. (Read my full review of Tubes for a more detailed explanation.)

Recently, Adesso upgraded Tubes with a new look and some cool new features. (Until now, Tubes was in beta--the current version is considered "release candidate 1." The app is now a bit sleeker and more modern looking, plus each Tube you create automatically becomes its own website, accessible only by your "friends." This means that, when you invite someone to share your tubes, that person doesn't have to download a thing--they can just visit your Tubes website and grab the files there. Better yet, if you want to share just one file with a friend, you can send them a dedicated link to a word doc, image, video, or any file in your Tubes. It's all password-protected unless you decide to make it "public."[Check out the screenshots after the jump.] Pretty damn cool. We'll probably take a more in-depth look at this--stay tuned.

Another notable update is the addition of what's called the "The Hub." It's a collection of public Tubes--some user-generated--where you can access all sorts of content from a variety of sources: Diggnation has one; you can too!.

In other news, Adesso has been invited to DEMO, the tech conference taking place later this month in San Diego, where they will release Tubes 1.0, and announce even more upgrades.
