Microsoft Could Enforce EULA Updates by Closing Accounts
There's some interesting discussion going on at Slashdot regarding a new Microsoft patent that was approved on Tuesday.
The wording is extremely dense, but the crux of the matter seems to be the use of a user's consent in regards to the privacy policy. In addition, the patent postulates a "don't bother me" option, where people could always automatically opt in to the policy, without reading it. Here's what people are so worked about: "4. The method of claim 3, further comprising denying use of the selected information by the application until consent to the change is granted in response to the user interface. 5. The method of claim 3, further comprising denying use of the selected information by the application if consent to the change is denied in response to the user interface." For some reason, people are arguing that that means that the application could revoke your account privileges if the consent agreement is not agreed to. It doesn't read that way to me at all. But then there's this: "First, when a billing relationship does not exist, if the user chooses to accept the policy changes at 520, then the TOU is updated at 522. However, if the user chooses reject the new terms of use at 524, the account is marked to be deleted at 526." I'm certainly not a lawyer, but it would seem that if there's a privacy policy I don't agree with, I'd want my account to be deleted, because I'm not using the service again. What some of the more conspiracy-minded folks at Slashdot are worried about is the "Don't Bother Me" option, set up for those ...

AppSpout: Recent Reviews from the PCMag.com Software Team
Norton Internet Security 2008: This app remains our Editors' Choice for security suites. Its virus/spyware scan scored very well on tests, and it cleans up more thoroughly than most. The firewall is tough and includes intrusion protection. And the new Identity Safe does a great job of managing personal info and passwords. The antispam is a throwaway, as is parental control--luckily, many of us can do without those. Site of the Week-imeem.com: This social-networking music site provides tons of free, full-length streaming content. Most internet radio sites prohibit you from fast-forwarding through tracks and and force you to listen to pre-set stations with a limited number of skips. Imeem, however gives you awesome control over your music, with easy to use playlist features to create your own playlist and mix-match the songs as you see fit. Packet8: Packet8 is a bargain-basement priced internet phone service that delivers premium-level calling. Just don't expect a premium ...

Free Nine Inch Nails Fan Remix Album Available Via Torrent Download
If you'd like to do something slightly more legal with your bandwidth and BitTorent, head on over to 9inchnails.com and snag yourself 21 of the best fan-submitted remixes (primarily) from Nine Inch Nails' last album Year Zero. And before you go cringing at the idea of fan remixes, you should know that a) NiN apparently released the master tracks to the album, making creative remixing a whole lot easier, and b) there were over 200 remixes submitted, which were listened to multiple judges, and whittled down to just 21.
My initial impressions? Most of these tracks are better than the vast majority of fan remixes I've heard over the years. And the source album was better than I expected it to be as well. So whether you're a fan of NiN or not, head on over to 9inchnails.com and stream a few tracks for yourself, or download the whole bunch. Then if you haven't yet, go buy the original Year Zero album. Reznor deserves some credit for being one of the few people in the mainstream music business actually tapping the potential of the Internet in new ways, instead of playing whack-a-mole with music pirates, while inconveniencing paying customers. Adobe to Launch Photo Express: Free Online Photo Editing
We found out via Gizmodo that Adobe plans to launch a free online app, Photo Express. Adobe's John Nack first broke the news about it on his blog; it was previewed at Photoshop World (click over to Nack's post for a full-size screengrab). According to Nack, Photo Express is not intended to replace PhotoShop or Elements, but instead will make some of the tools accessible for more people. Sounds like something that will come in very handy for bloggers, in particular. There's no word yet on availability, but rest assured we'll do a thorough test of it when it's available. Meanwhile the PC Mag news team is contacting Adobe for more info; we'll link when they post a story. UPDATE: An Adobe spokesman said the company does not have any details to share regarding availability or additional features. "John Nack's blog at Adobe gives about as much information as we can give at the moment," he said.

AccuWeather Adds RSS Feeds
Ubiquitous weather authority AccuWeather has added an RSS Center to its popular AccuWeather.com site. Aside from personalized feeds of your local weather conditions, separate feeds exist for a whole host of weather-related news, and blogs from AccuWeather meteorologists like Dr. Joe Sobel. AccuWeather even has a global warming blog, so you can now add melty wet headlines to the aggregator of your choice. Alternatively, you could put live local weather conditions on your own blog, and let readers know it's raining in your area, which might be why your posts are unusually depressing.

Kaplan on EcoTech: Make Your Words Count
PC Magazine executive editor Jeremy Kaplan has been writing a weekly column for the newest blog in our family, GoodCleanTech. This week he tells us about a cool add-on for Microsoft Life Messenger that shares ad revenue with worthy causes: Until recently, I thought AOL still owned most of the instant messaging market. I'm behind the times, I guess; as it turns out, Microsoft swept up a decent sized chunk of the market. Windows Live Messenger garners a 26% market share, and Yahoo! Messenger gets 21%, while AOL's Instant Messenger owns 51%, according to last year's data from Nielson/NetRatings. But in my eyes, AOL hasn't innovated enough to really justify that giant slice of the pie. We're all sticking around simply because everyone else is already using the service. Long ago, I moved over to Trillian, which lets me chat with friends and coworkers on multiple instant messaging networks, rather than just the AOL Instant Message network I had been using. But as Microsoft Messenger has grown in popularity, and transformed into Microsoft Live Messenger, it's added a few great features to really earn that growth, including a simple new one that really helps out. For the rest of the column, go to GoodCleanTech.
