Ubuntu: Beyond the Terminal

Ubuntu Interface

Linux, here I come. Making the leap to Linux was a bit scary for me. I've never experienced it before, let alone even seen its interface and what it can do. And it seems more now than ever that more people are trying out Linux: PC Mag's latest issue features a guide on how to install Linux; various Dell systems ship with Ubuntu; and recently former editor-in-chief Jim Louderback hinted that he's sick of Vista and may make the switch. With much support from my boyfriend Eric, who's also a first-time Linux user, we dove head first into the deep waters of Linux.

Choosing Ubuntu. Linux isn't just one operating system like Windows or Mac; it consists of many different OSs, such as Debian, SuSE, RedHat, and Ubuntu. Eric and I decided to go with Ubuntu (pronounced "oo-BOON-too"), since it is known for being the easiest Linux distribution for new users, and it doesn't really require using the terminal. Where did that unusual name come from anyway? Well, Ubuntu is said to derive from a "South African ethical ideology focusing on people's allegiances and relations with each other." In other words, "humanity toward others." The name is fitting, don't you think? We're running the most up-to-date version, which is 7.04 (April 2007) on our Dell Inspiron 530.

Desktop environment. The default desktop environment for Ubuntu is GNOME, which is what we run. It's a very clean and organized interface (as you can see above), and it didn't take me too long to get used to it. It's kind of a cross between Mac and Windows. There's a button to hide all windows and show the desktop in the lower left hand corner. In ...

Fu**edCompany.com Fu**ed; No One Notices

fucked.JPG It appears that Fu**edCompany.com (click through for the non-PC URL) has joined its own deadpool.

"Fu**edcompany is temporarily fu**ed" (again, our edits) reads the site's blank front page. Clicking through to the "old stuff" reveals that the last update was in June, however, and both of the forum sites aren't working, either. (The Google cache returns the blank front page.)

Now, posting about a site's demise two months later might be somewhat embarrassing, except for the fact that very few seemed to notice. Out of all the posts archived on Technorati, only Incredibill seems to have been enough of a fan to actually check back once in a while. Oh, and in an homage to the site, we won't email site owner "Pud" for a comment.Wikipedia, meanwhile, also notes the site appears to be dead, in an update marked "08/2007".

Fu**edCompanyReloaded.com has made an effort to resuscitate the site, although the site contains references to whofailedtoday.com. "If you have any problem with the previous owner, please contact him directly," the site notes.

Looks like "Pud" should have accepted Michael Arrington's "buyout offer" after all.

AuditoriumA: A Guided Tour of the Web

AuditoriumA - Page

If you're looking for a few sites worth checking out (and you've already finished PCMag's Top 100 Websites, Top 100 Classic sites, and Top 100 Undiscovered sites, naturally) you have a couple of choices. You could head over to a social bookmarking site like Digg or Del.icio.us and see what everyone else is reading, or you can look for recommendations from other communities and trusted blogs (like *ahem* AppScout). If you're looking for something even more exclusive, head over to AuditoriumA, which boasts the tagline "all the Web's a stage...we bring the best of it to you."

The editors behind AuditoriumA select sites that they feel represent blogs and content worth reading and viewing, featuring it on their site so you don't waste your time bouncing from Website to Website looking for something interesting to read.

AuditoriumA - Categories

AuditoriumA editors feature news sites, blogs, podcasts, Web video, and music resources deemed worthy of checking out. The idea being that non-technical and busy people will appreciate a linking service that hand-chooses only the most exclusive content for its users. Additionally, AuditoriumA looks to cater to people who are tired of the low signal-to-noise ratio of social bookmarking sites and the types of communities that rise up around sites like Digg or Fark.

AuditoriumA - Web TV

The trouble with a service like AuditoriumA is that it essentially takes something that's completely free on the rest of the Web (links), and makes it a scarce resource by only choosing a few that are deemed worthy by a ...

Scientists Connect at NanoHUB

nanoHUB - Logo

Going beyond the traditional band and teen-centric focus of social networking sites, NanoHUB, created by Purdue University researchers and scientists studying nanotechnology, is an informative and well-designed site that's free to join for scientists, educators, and students alike.

NanoHUB - Page

NanoHUB is a researcher's dream network. Fair warning; the target audience at NanoHUB are researchers and scientists. Current hot topics on the site include carbon nanotubes and cyberinfrastructure. The service allows members and scientists to connect and discuss technical topics, but NanoHUB is also an online research lab with tools that lets students, scientists, and other interested parties run their own simulations. NanoHUB also allows members to upload papers and journal articles, contribute materials for others to use, and schedule online meetings and Web conferences.

nanoHUB - Calendar

The calendar at NanoHUB is already pretty full, and the community is very large, with more than 24,000 users. Researchers and scientists around the globe are uploading new reference material, papers, and tools each day. All of the reference material at NanoHUB is uploaded by members and can be tagged for easy searching and rated by the community. While NanoHUB lacks the social networking features that a lot of Facebook and MySpace users might miss, the service allows users to comment, rate, and discuss posted papers and documents.

There are no friends-lists and no comments on your profile at NanoHUB; most user profiles have a photo and a bit of academic information about themselves, including where they've studied, where they work currently, and some research areas and projects that they work on. ...
