Google Video Revokes DRM: Purchased Videos are Gone

Kelly Clarkson

I got the strangest e-mail from Google Video just now. Seems they're doing away with their download-to-own/download-to-rent programs, so everything I've purchased will from now on be inaccessible. It's a DRM nightmare come true!

See, when Google Video first launched, in the course of writing a review of it for PC Magazine I purchased and downloaded a Kelly Clarkson video for $1.99. I "bought" it with the understanding that I "owned" it; as in, "this video file now belongs to me because I purchased it." Guess I should've expensed it after all!

As a consolation for taking away something that I owned (what we call "stealing," in common parlance), Google's giving me $2 to use in my next Google Checkout purchase. Is Google exercising eminent domain on my purchased media files?

Luckily, I only had the one video, and it's not something I've watched since I did the review a year and a half ago. So Google's decision doesn't really affect me at all, but it's the principle of the thing: if Google Video can do this, what other online music/video store purchases are susceptible to being "turned off"?

Flickr Improves Web Photo Uploader

flikrUpload3.jpg

Photoholics take notice: If you haven't downloaded and installed the Uploadr desktop software to facilitate getting pictures into the number-one photo sharing site--or don't want to--improvements to Flickr's Web uploader now make it a lot easier to get a slew of photos online.

The six-file limit has gone away; now you can just select all the files you want from a file-browsing dialog and start a bulk upload. The upload progress is indicated by both a bar below the image list and a pink vertical line that moves across each image entry. Trust me, it's a nice little redesign.

And now once you've finished uploading, you can tag multiple image files in batch mode and add them to one of your preexisting sets (or you can even create a set from the same page). You can also add titles and descriptions for all of them on a the single convenient page that appears after the upload. The whole thing is hard to beat for usability.

iPhotoMeasure: Ditch the Tape Measure, Grab a Digicam

iPhotoMeasure.jpg When the team here at PC Magazine first got wind of iPhotoMeasure, software that promises to let you take accurate measurements of objects in digital photos, a flurry of e-mails flew back and forth about how it might work and how accurate it might be. So to satisfy our curiosity (and yours), I tested the software out, and found that it performs pretty well. There are some limitations, though a much expanded new version of the software due out in a month or so looks to make the software much more robust.

For anyone doing a decent amount of remodeling or redecorating, and especially for larger-scale construction and contracting work, iPhotoMeasure could save a lot of time and effort. Forget having to climb a ladder to measure a window, or having to move that ladder all over your house to calculate how much paint you need to buy. With iPhotoMeasure, you can just snap a few pics from your digicam and let the software do most of the work for you, whether you've got a PC or a Mac.

First off, you'll have to stick up a DigiTarget (a black-and-white square of predetermined size) somewhere in the frame of where you're going to take the photo, on the same plane (like a wall) where you're going to be measuring. Once that's up, just take your snap, load the image in iPhotoMeasure, and commence measuring.

The Flash-based software looks simple but good. And since all the tools are laid out on the screen instead of buried in menus, iPhotoMeasure couldn't be much easier to use. Click the camera icon ...

Social Networking Cash Prize Logo Contest

Mister Wong, a popular social networking site, is having a logo contest and offering a load of cash to the winner.  $12,000 in cash prizes are available to the winners of the logo design contest.  So head on over to Mister Wong’s upload page and show off your stuff.

Registered users will be allowed to vote on their favorite logos submitted for the contest.  The huge list will be narrowed down to 12 from the members votes.  Those twelve will then be sent to the final three judges and a winner will be chosen.

As far as I know, logo designs are only limited by one aspect… no human images.  You can design just about anything under the sun, submit as many logos as you would like and hopefully find the time to spend all that first place cash.

To find the full details of the logo design contest, visit Mister Wong’s site.  And good luck!
